"Error during login request"

I just bought the game and every time I boot it up, it stops on the "Downloading User Profile" step before giving me the message "error during login request." I do not know what to do to fix this since it cannot seem to even establish a profile for me. I used to play this game years ago on the free version and finally decided to buy it after all this time, so this result is rather disheartening. The only thing I can think of is that I used to play it on something called Desura, which I think I might have linked my Steam account to, so maybe that is causing problems.

EDIT: I do not know if it helps any, but I just looked through my old passwords and found one for this game, so maybe there is some kind of conflict between that old account and now?

Hi, looks like there's a problem connecting to our servers. We're not receiving the login request from you, can you please try the game outside steam to verify if the problem is related to steam or your internet connection?

Alternatively you might want to check if you have a firewall active that might be blocking the connection to our servers

I went and downloaded the non-steam client and it initially froze, but was able to download everything once I ran it as administrator. During that process I saw it download the steam.api file, and now launching it through Steam has no issue. It seems like the Steam client was a little too eager to sign me in and did not take the time to download the proper files--or something.
