Is the color a timing thing? is it which key to press ; I have no idea.
My opinion of the quicktime is that it is a great idea, but is far too forgiving. If you are supposed to hit "blue" and accidentally hit "yellow" then you still proceed with the death animation. It would be more interesting if you messed up on a quicktime color that the guy would sneak out of the death animation and you would have to kill him from scratch all over again. Just my opinion.
The colors are based on the XBOX controller, if you play with keyboard/mouse it loose his sense imo.

Totally agree with you, it should be more challenging. And to take your idea futher, if you miss a color then the enemy can do a devastating combo and lower your health or disarm you..something like this...
