Optimal Settings for Nvidia Users (Guide) [1080p @ 60FPS]
So I downloaded this game thinking my i5 4670k and GTX 780 3GB would be able to play it at 1080p and 60 fps without any issues harware-wise. When I first booted up the game it looked great, but there were several issues I was having that would come and go as I fixed one, then the other. For instance, I had a solid 60 fps in 1080p, but then it would go to 59, then 58, then all of a sudden to 30 for a significant period of gameplay (3-5 mins). When I fixed that issue and had a solid 60 fps, then I started getting really unpleasant screen tearing. I managed to find solutions to these problems for myself (60fps @ 1080p with no screen tearing) and figured I'd help anyone else out there that may be experiencing any of these issues. I do get some drops very rarely but it's extremely hard to notice unless I'm playing with FRAPS on as the lowest I drop to is 51 or 52 fps. If you have similar specs or even better, this should really help you out like it did for me. I've tried to dub it down for people who might not know what they're doing but it isn't really complicated.

First things first, boot up RYSE. Go to the settings and make sure under the Graphics tab your settings are:

Window Resolution: 1920x1080
Supersampling: OFF
Graphics Quality: CUSTOM (This will automatically change in the next step)
Texture Resolution: VERY HIGH (This can't be changed for me and is locked)
Fullscreen: OFF
Vsync: DISABLED
Lock FPS: DISABLED

Then go to the Advanced Graphics tab and make sure your settings are:

Shading Quality: HIGH
Object Detail: HIGH
Shadows Quality: HIGH
Particle Quality: HIGH
Animation Quality: HIGH
Motion Blur: ENABLED
Temporal Anti-Aliasing: ENABLED
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x

Once this is done make sure the settings are changed and exit the game. Open up Nvidia Control Panel and expand the "3D Settings" category, then select "Manage 3D settings". Click on the "Program Settings" tab and add or select your "RYSE.exe" file. Once selected, scroll down to "Vertical Sync" and select "Adaptive". Once selected, exit Nvidia Control panel and make sure you save your changes.

Next, open "Computer" and select the drive Steam is installed on. For me its "Computer/New Volume (D:)/Steam", but it might be different for you if it's installed on the same drive as your OS. I've installed mine on a separate HDD. Once you've found the Steam folder, go to "SteamApps/common/Ryse Son of Rome". You should see a file called "system". Open it with Notepad and at the very bottom type in "r_fullscreenwindow=1". Once completed, save your changes and close Notepad.

Now just open RYSE and you should experience what I am; RYSE in 1080p @ 60 fps with no tearing! :)

Hope this helps anyone who might not know how to fix any of these issues!

I'm running a 4930K @ 4.5Ghz / GTX 980 w/ 344.16 drivers on Windows 8.1 64-bit. Performance is quite poor at 1080p, no matter whether I pick high, normal, or low settings, with frame rates varying between 35-50fps 99% of the time.

As I've already mentioned on another thread, GPU usage tops out at about 80% on high (and about 50% on normal), and turning settings down to low does absolutely nothing to improve performance.

Something's definitely causing a bottleneck, and it probably has to do with both the game itself and Nvidia drivers. That, or performance is just bad for everyone, and I'm one of the few who's painfully aware of it. ;-)

same problem here i5 3500k gtx 970 g1 and stutter like hell. Dropping from 60 to 40 and even 30 sometimes. Playing without vsync helps a little but its almost unplayable due to fps variation and stutter.

I'm rocking an i7 with an MSI GTX 970 and don't suffer from any stutter at all.. Maybe your cpu? Make sure super sampling is off. That ♥♥♥♥ is a major hitter in any game and barely makes a difference at higher resolutions anyway.

Upon further testing I'd say it's got something something to do with "threaded optimization", or more simply, it's very likely a CPU bottleneck. At one point I was able to double my frame rates and achieve 99% GPU load by setting "threaded optimization" to "on" instead of "auto" in NV Inspector. I was never able to repeat it though after restarting my PC.

I need to find a way to force proper CPU utilization. My 6-core/12 thread i7 is practically sitting idle with this game, so it's no wonder performance is all over the place.

this pointed me in the right direction to fix my crap framrate on low. now thanks to you i can run it perfect on medium. thanks

Good to hear. Glad it helped! :)

PYRO I cant stress it enough how much this has helped me, I thank you for this bud! I will be adding the parts of your fix into my Post of the things I hadnt worked out myself that you did. Like the Fullscreen tweak, and will ofcourse be crediting you! Thanks again!!

That's awesome!! Glad I wasn't the only person experiencing these issues and this post is actually helping people. :)

I have a different problem with this game, and if you people have any ideas that might help, I'll be happy to hear. The thing is... I can't download more than 116 mb of the game, after which, of course, it won't work. I got it like three days ago and still have no idea what the problem is...

Oh it is PYRO! And your not the only one unfortunately.

ukimian707, you have a 32bit pc, you wont be able to play this unless you upgrade to 64bit unfortunately :S
when i put the "r_fullscreenwindow=1" command in the system file, the game wont run :/

Ok so I'm not sure if this will make a difference, but move the "r_fullscreenwindow=1" a full space below the last line in the file. Right now it's right underneath and there should be a space if it looked the same as mine. That's how mine is and it works fine. If there's no luck there, take the line out and launch the game. Technically you may not need that line of code, but you will notice screen tearing if you do. Let me know what happens!
no joy unfortunately
The game won't boot even without the line of code?
no just thinks about it and then nothing, without the code its fine :/
Have you changed all the settings in the game to be identical to mine? What are your specs btw? It sounds like a buggy install because that line only ensures the game is launching in borderless windowed mode. Try all the other steps though and forget about the line of code in the system file. Launch the game and see if you're getting 1080p @ 60fps w/o tearing. If it's fine then leave it, if not try the code one more time in a different order in the system file. Maybe the top? Worst case scenario is you may need to reinstall the game. Let me know if this helps!
