Optimal Settings for Nvidia Users (Guide) [1080p @ 60FPS]
So I downloaded this game thinking my i5 4670k and GTX 780 3GB would be able to play it at 1080p and 60 fps without any issues harware-wise. When I first booted up the game it looked great, but there were several issues I was having that would come and go as I fixed one, then the other. For instance, I had a solid 60 fps in 1080p, but then it would go to 59, then 58, then all of a sudden to 30 for a significant period of gameplay (3-5 mins). When I fixed that issue and had a solid 60 fps, then I started getting really unpleasant screen tearing. I managed to find solutions to these problems for myself (60fps @ 1080p with no screen tearing) and figured I'd help anyone else out there that may be experiencing any of these issues. I do get some drops very rarely but it's extremely hard to notice unless I'm playing with FRAPS on as the lowest I drop to is 51 or 52 fps. If you have similar specs or even better, this should really help you out like it did for me. I've tried to dub it down for people who might not know what they're doing but it isn't really complicated.

First things first, boot up RYSE. Go to the settings and make sure under the Graphics tab your settings are:

Window Resolution: 1920x1080
Supersampling: OFF
Graphics Quality: CUSTOM (This will automatically change in the next step)
Texture Resolution: VERY HIGH (This can't be changed for me and is locked)
Fullscreen: OFF
Vsync: DISABLED
Lock FPS: DISABLED

Then go to the Advanced Graphics tab and make sure your settings are:

Shading Quality: HIGH
Object Detail: HIGH
Shadows Quality: HIGH
Particle Quality: HIGH
Animation Quality: HIGH
Motion Blur: ENABLED
Temporal Anti-Aliasing: ENABLED
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x

Once this is done make sure the settings are changed and exit the game. Open up Nvidia Control Panel and expand the "3D Settings" category, then select "Manage 3D settings". Click on the "Program Settings" tab and add or select your "RYSE.exe" file. Once selected, scroll down to "Vertical Sync" and select "Adaptive". Once selected, exit Nvidia Control panel and make sure you save your changes.

Next, open "Computer" and select the drive Steam is installed on. For me its "Computer/New Volume (D:)/Steam", but it might be different for you if it's installed on the same drive as your OS. I've installed mine on a separate HDD. Once you've found the Steam folder, go to "SteamApps/common/Ryse Son of Rome". You should see a file called "system". Open it with Notepad and at the very bottom type in "r_fullscreenwindow=1". Once completed, save your changes and close Notepad.

Now just open RYSE and you should experience what I am; RYSE in 1080p @ 60 fps with no tearing! :)

Hope this helps anyone who might not know how to fix any of these issues!

i thought vsync had to be enabled to do adaptive vsync

No. I don't know where you heard this but that isn't true. Vsync needs to be off in the game settings and "Adaptive" should be selected in Nvidia Control Panel. When vsync is turned on in the game you will get screen tearing because RYSE doesn't have in-game frame pre-rendering.

what does having full screen off and then typing that in notepad do for you? i mean i know it will then make it full screen ... but why turn it off and then do that?

Thanks!! this fixed it for me, plus I also changed back Threaded Optimization to Auto, I have it on before.
Now I have constant 60 FPS. Before I was averaging at 35-45. Game is much more enjoyable now.

I only wish they have more move sets or additional skill moves to unlock as we progress. I am beginning to get sick of seeing the same moves over and over through the course of the game. But it was still enjoyable, hopefully it won't get stale.

Typing that into notepad ensures the game is opening in borderless windowed mode upon launching RYSE.

That's awesome! Glad it helped. :)

I appreciate the effort, PYRO, however your solution does not seem to work for me. Hopefully Nvidia & Crytek will manage to sort this out with a patch/new drivers. :-)

Sorry GVAmson23. Do you mind me asking your specs and what your issues are?

Sorry GVAmson23. Do you mind me asking your specs and what your issues are?

I'm running a 4930K @ 4.5Ghz / GTX 980 w/ 344.16 drivers on Windows 8.1 64-bit. Performance is quite poor at 1080p, no matter whether I pick high, normal, or low settings, with frame rates varying between 35-50fps 99% of the time.

As I've already mentioned on another thread, GPU usage tops out at about 80% on high (and about 50% on normal), and turning settings down to low does absolutely nothing to improve performance.

Something's definitely causing a bottleneck, and it probably has to do with both the game itself and Nvidia drivers. That, or performance is just bad for everyone, and I'm one of the few who's painfully aware of it. ;-)

I have the same problem as you, it definitely has to do with the drivers. Try tweaking stuff inside your Nvidia control panel. But I think the most important part is to create a profile of the game in the "3D settings" and tweak that. Also try verifying integrity and restarting your computer, I did a lot of stuff just to have a stable FPS and one of them did the trick, but mostly in the Nvidia COntrol panel settings.

That definitely sounds like game/driver related. I hope they update the drivers or update with a patch so you can enjoy the game.

I know this is an annoying thing to have to do, but only other thing I can think of is maybe reinstalling the game and Nvidia drivers. Surprisingly enough this has actually worked for me with other games that had a bad install. Unlikely but maybe worth a shot if you aren't enjoying the game.

Thanks guys, I'll give your suggestions a try, and will let you know if anything happens to do the trick. :-)

same problem here i5 3500k gtx 970 g1 and stutter like hell. Dropping from 60 to 40 and even 30 sometimes. Playing without vsync helps a little but its almost unplayable due to fps variation and stutter.
