This was the best hack and slash since god of war, I loved the game although it was short, the multiplayer gets old quite quick. Anyone have any recommendations for a similar type of game?

Thanks!

Definately Shadow of Mordor. The executions against Saurons army never get old and the combat moves are awesome. I went around the game world for ages just picking fights lol

Yeah, I enjoyed that a great deal, great suggestion, finished it in one sitting also. I tried the batman franchise and its also not too different, but the whole story just puts me off. Surely there are more games, I know Ryse didnt do as well as it would have liked and I dont really get why. well to each is own. Any other ideas would be welcome :)

Hello !
If you love hack and slash 3rd person game as god of war and ryse:
I can suggest you lord of the ring: war in the north !
It's same mechanics ! you move forward//slash ennemie//win xp//move forward//slash ennemie get xp//upgrades your caractere skill//stat.

Level max is 40
Coop avaible for 3 player. (however, it s little empty, but playing in solo is ok too)
3 classe avaible: Warrior/mage/shadow like legolas.
Quest
upgradable gear.
Upgradable weapons
Arena mod (2arena)
4Difficulty level with different loot stat and look for all caractere.

//Execution ok, but maybe they have less than ryse

Well, if you love level based hack and slash 3rd person as ryse/god of war....., you should take a look and why not buying this one, spescially if you love lord of the ring !
+Little price

I recommend it for all loving ryse hack'n slash style.

The Batman Arkham series have the same flowing combat system as Ryse

Space Marine is also a great game.

Diablo 3. Thats 100% of hack and slash game but it doesnt have death animations. If you like death animations, Shadow of Mordor, Witcher 3 has some, but nothing like in Ryse. Ryse is kind of unique.

If you've got a PS2 lying around and don't mind searching for old games on eBay, this game is very much a spiritual successor to the excellent Shadow of Rome and Colosseum: Road to Freedom. They're old, but they're still VERY fun in the same way Ryse is.

The two Lord of the Rings hack n' slash games (Two Towers and Return of the King) were also very Ryse-ish.

A while ago on the Xbox360 I bought a game called Conan. If you haven't played it, buy it and play that. Simply an amazing game IMO for its time.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys (its been a while XD).

@Frost, yep played all 3 (loved Shadow of Rome, though the stealth missions could be a pain)

@ superman played diablo 3 to death (totally different to Ryse though imo, more like path of exile and original sin)

@fani thanks, I'll check it out

@artlock I'll check it out

@lowfatmilk I ended up playing the series, but I didnt enjoy it nearly as much tbh.

@Supremeghost I'll check it out.

Thanks guys!

The First Templar is brilliant, it has nice cloth textures and gameplay but not hardcore like as this one...I think it little more knight ages.

yeah - finished that one as well. I recently played some more ryse again - it is quite simple, I just loved the story and fluid combat. I think you felt the impact of each hit. Shadow of Mordor is probably my second favourite (if we stay within similar genre type games), I just felt the story was a bit forced and finishing it turned into a bit of a grind.

The QTE in Ryse reminds me more of God Of War -> I think its a shame there wont be another ryse game. Even though it copied elements from everywhere else, it came together as a unique gaming experience.

Agreed totally on the unique gaming experience comment. There is something to that comment, since it's the part that's missed by those who shoot it down.

I'm guilty myself. When I first played this game, I had expectations. I seen that first level with the automatic scorpion "turret scene" I said to myself "ok, this has been done before, and it's not been good on any game" and then I felt the clunky combat system that fell short of shadow of mordor and thought, " Ok, it's copying that system, but not doing it as well"

Then I seen the first real chapter where your father tells you "save Rome from them" blah blah blah and then he dies and I felt the story was going to be cheezie with Rome portrayed as the rightious good guys fighting the mindless barbarians, and that doesnt work with me.

Then I opened the next chapter and seen the beach landing and thought, " Ok, now its trying to be Saving Private Ryan, Rome edition. This game is just one big copy cat that does none of it as good as the last guy.

I stopped there, didn't move forward in the beach chapter, turned the game off, considerd a refund almost on principle, and didn't intend to play it again.

But then my buddy spotted it and insisted on trying it. I'm glad I went along, because the games story, and all it's unique merits started to appear to me and it really shined. By Mid way through the game I was loving the story, the feel, and I was gaining better understanding and acceptance of it's combat system and use of QTE type stuff.

The " Why " of Ryse: Son fo Rome's commercial failure is hard to pinpoint because it's rooted in the psychology of gamers. Gamers for one thing have an automatic negative reaction to seeing things like " Turret scenes" and " QTE " and this game uses lots of them. The combat system as has been repeated to death is off putting at first. The opening prologue and first chapter are a bland and uninteresting opening to an otherwise awesome story.

Ryse: Son of Rome is a great game but one that dares to spite gamers by doing all of the things they hate the most, and cramming a metric ton of it into the first 1.5 Levels, and for that it paid a price.

The Cursed Crusade might be worth a try. It's nowhere as beautiful as Ryse but it has an interesting "weight" mechanic that makes fighting in plate armour oddly satisfying.

@motherboard11: really good point about the reason why Ryse didn't succeed. QTEs tend to alienate players for a reason.

Yep, agree to a certain extent. However, it doesnt explain why other recycled garbage meets with so much success. I think breaking the game down into its constituent parts rarely works when evaluating a game (unless it really is a mash-up of distictly different gameplay types).

If you take RSOR as a package, the good and the bad, I maintain it was a great game. The cutscenes and voice acting were thoroughly impressive, the combat system felt "right". The QTEs didnt get boring, the online co-op in arena was also good.

I guess most people didnt really give it the chance it deserves, because its not until your fairly far into the York campaign that the game really shines.

If I had to recommend a similar game, the only one that comes close is LOTR SOM. I've also noticed that many launch titles or exclusives for consoles get bashed even if the PC ports are great.

So I guess im a sucker for QTE (I loved that in the original god of war).

Anyway, thanks for bouncing some ideas around. I'm still disappointed that they've announced the discontinuation of the franchise.
