The two Lord of the Rings hack n' slash games (Two Towers and Return of the King) were also very Ryse-ish.
@Frost, yep played all 3 (loved Shadow of Rome, though the stealth missions could be a pain)
@ superman played diablo 3 to death (totally different to Ryse though imo, more like path of exile and original sin)
@fani thanks, I'll check it out
@artlock I'll check it out
@lowfatmilk I ended up playing the series, but I didnt enjoy it nearly as much tbh.
@Supremeghost I'll check it out.
Thanks guys!
The QTE in Ryse reminds me more of God Of War -> I think its a shame there wont be another ryse game. Even though it copied elements from everywhere else, it came together as a unique gaming experience.
Agreed totally on the unique gaming experience comment. There is something to that comment, since it's the part that's missed by those who shoot it down.
I'm guilty myself. When I first played this game, I had expectations. I seen that first level with the automatic scorpion "turret scene" I said to myself "ok, this has been done before, and it's not been good on any game" and then I felt the clunky combat system that fell short of shadow of mordor and thought, " Ok, it's copying that system, but not doing it as well"
Then I seen the first real chapter where your father tells you "save Rome from them" blah blah blah and then he dies and I felt the story was going to be cheezie with Rome portrayed as the rightious good guys fighting the mindless barbarians, and that doesnt work with me.
Then I opened the next chapter and seen the beach landing and thought, " Ok, now its trying to be Saving Private Ryan, Rome edition. This game is just one big copy cat that does none of it as good as the last guy.
I stopped there, didn't move forward in the beach chapter, turned the game off, considerd a refund almost on principle, and didn't intend to play it again.
But then my buddy spotted it and insisted on trying it. I'm glad I went along, because the games story, and all it's unique merits started to appear to me and it really shined. By Mid way through the game I was loving the story, the feel, and I was gaining better understanding and acceptance of it's combat system and use of QTE type stuff.
The " Why " of Ryse: Son fo Rome's commercial failure is hard to pinpoint because it's rooted in the psychology of gamers. Gamers for one thing have an automatic negative reaction to seeing things like " Turret scenes" and " QTE " and this game uses lots of them. The combat system as has been repeated to death is off putting at first. The opening prologue and first chapter are a bland and uninteresting opening to an otherwise awesome story.
Ryse: Son of Rome is a great game but one that dares to spite gamers by doing all of the things they hate the most, and cramming a metric ton of it into the first 1.5 Levels, and for that it paid a price.
@motherboard11: really good point about the reason why Ryse didn't succeed. QTEs tend to alienate players for a reason.
Yep, agree to a certain extent. However, it doesnt explain why other recycled garbage meets with so much success. I think breaking the game down into its constituent parts rarely works when evaluating a game (unless it really is a mash-up of distictly different gameplay types).
If you take RSOR as a package, the good and the bad, I maintain it was a great game. The cutscenes and voice acting were thoroughly impressive, the combat system felt "right". The QTEs didnt get boring, the online co-op in arena was also good.
I guess most people didnt really give it the chance it deserves, because its not until your fairly far into the York campaign that the game really shines.
If I had to recommend a similar game, the only one that comes close is LOTR SOM. I've also noticed that many launch titles or exclusives for consoles get bashed even if the PC ports are great.
So I guess im a sucker for QTE (I loved that in the original god of war).
Anyway, thanks for bouncing some ideas around. I'm still disappointed that they've announced the discontinuation of the franchise.
