High Comboes are extremely important. Try at least a 100 Combo for high XP gain.
Just do yourself and your matchpartners a favor and read the guide from linn4you ...nothing makes me want to quit more at the moment then seeing a new guy using mars as god in survival mode relying on me to choose apollo (i dont care using apollo but mars messes up my executions often as its unreliable when its up or not ...i tend to count my hits on enemys to know when they will be ripe for executions ...its 1 hit less with mars which makes me often kill them unintentionally) just to keep him alive (and then hes just hacking away instead of actually focusing on executions).
Yes, in the beginning ranking up will feel very very slow, that is normal, but as you progress and get better equipment and learn more skills, you will rank up faster.
Also true: Dockyards is the easiest survival map and excellent for getting high hit combos (which will rank you up quicker) primarily because there are no arrow or fire bombardments and no archers. Those things can kill hit combos quickly.
Tip for getting higher hit combos:
Use taunting (PageDown key on keyboards) to prevent your hit combo from expiring. When you taunt, that combo is maintained even with no fighting going on. Just make sure to watch when the combo starts flashing (indicating that it's about to expire) and press taunt again to keep it going, because it will not maintain your combo indefinitely.
Leveling combos is about timing, getting Legendary hits and Legendary Executions is a higher end execution xp bonus and more importantly perfect/legendary hits inside execution encounters reward 3 hits in one. You can be jumping your combo 3 points per click, thats 33 mouse clicks compared to 100 for 100 combo points
As for choosing gear, Regen of Health and Focus are most essential, the amount rewarded after a execution will be much larger with health regen and focus regen, focus time is also of good strategic use. Someone with 6 bars of health and focus but regens less is not as survivable as someone with 4 bars of heatlh and focus that can constanly replenish health and focus fuller and faster.
In choosing gear, get common gear until level 4, get the god based shield and swords for okay weapons till level 4, mix and match gear avoid spending a lot on any particulary tier the percentage rates between tiers is around 1 to 3 %, at level 5/6 buy up the rares and mix the tiers for a fast regen, long-term fight surviving gladiator.
When another teammate needs to be revived, use your focus ability, use the crowd taunt to save your combo status, and then run to your teammate, if you roll, and roll more than twice, the combo points may go away.
If you are facing an enemy and hear another enemy grunt/yell and give some sort of preparing posture - they are about to turn red, the strong attack they will give is sometimes not avoidable, so when they grunt/yell go hit the barbarian scum or hit your focus ability.
The worst focus ability is Mars, the only save of mars is if you get behind on thinning the barbarian herd - otherwise the Jupiter / Apollo combo is best for survival. Mars is best brought into the arena via your potions, there is a potion that allows for one hit kills for a limited time when consumed, it is a great way to thin the enemy count when overwhelmed.
Lastly on Solo play, you can get some pretty good combos going in the Courtyard level (about 300), mind the archers and use the crowd taunt often, I usually manage about 1 to 2 levels and 7 minutes of play per solo courtyard feat, none of the other levels have as accessible objectives but are possible to get 100-250 combo points.
