That said, I myself was never able to come even close to getting the game working properly. As detailed in my posts in one of the threads, most of the files you have to download to fix the problems have long since fallen prey to link rot and/or operating system updates, and seemingly no one has bothered to come up with replacements since there are no longer many people interested in playing the game. All I can really offer is best of luck.
DVD Expres Player even works on Windows 10.
About the others problems, in "advanced settings (video)", try to use the software mode (instead of the hardware mode).
Also disable "animated textures" might help.
The problem of this game is the version released here is the DVD Version. CD version would have been better (for example, it doesn't need a decoder for videos).
And for "Error code does not incidate an error" problem, you can either :
1) Turn off MIDI sounds (source of the error, but it'll disable background music)
2) Install VirtualMidiSynth (https://coolsoft.altervista.org/download/CoolSoft_VirtualMIDISynth_2.9.1.exe)
Download the required soundfont (http://www.synthfont.com/SoundFonts/FluidR3_GM.sfArk)
Install SFArk which is needed to unzip the .sfArk file (https://web.archive.org/web/20070702210120/http://melodymachine.com/files/sfark_setup.exe)
Open SFArk and go to file > Open, then open the FluidR3_GM.sfArk file you downloaded, then click Start. This will unzip the .sfArk file into a .sf2 file that we need.
Open 'Configure VirtualMidiSynth' and on the Soundfonts tab, press the green + icon. Select the FluidR3_GM.sf2 file.
Launch Tex Murphy: Overseer, go to settings, audio, and then change the MIDI device to "Microsoft MIDI Mapper", make sure that MUTE is not checked.
Then, no more error code and background music will work fine. Don't forget to reboot the game once you changed the MIDI device or music won't play.
I was having the same problem and this program works like a charm. Thank you so much.
With "DVD Express Player" for the video and "VirtualMidiSynth" for the audio, the game works fine on Windows 7/8/10 :)
(found a better program than DVD Express, which was incompatible with the program which fix transparent textures).
