Stuck in chapter 4

I've reached a point where I can't proceed and the walkthrough guide doesn't state anything else I should be doing. I've just bumped the animals, breaking the engine, but I am unable to grapple along the left hand route. Pulling the lever launches it and reels back in to no effect. Clicking around the centre (becomes grapple icon) has no impact unless it's a very specific spot to click. Any ideas short of reloading a previous save and hoping (saved, quit and reloaded this point without change)?

If you like, try watching the video walkthrough for Chapter 4. As I recall, aiming the grapple is a bit tricky at times.
