Issue with items in inventory. Am I doing something wrong?

Whenever I click on an item in my inventory, it just reverts back to the main game. It doesn't let me equip an item, hold an item, or stay on inventory screen so I can combine it with another item. Is this a glitch or am I doing something wrong?

Not a glitch just unintuitive game design.

You must first find hotspot which can receive item (shows two cogs), rightclick it and inventory opens, NOW choose item (leftclick) and if it was correct green circle appears around cogs and you can use it; otherwise inventory closes and it will do nothing.

Also if you can combine item, then "closed link" icon on the left side will start to blink after selecting, now find item that shows green circle around pointer; again if you choose wrong the inventory closes, as usual :D
