Why bump such an old thread?
Exactly, and if those shipped with the game I would agree that it is intended to have seperate screens, but it isn't. The game was shipped with split screen.
You guys simply created these rules for your own gaming experience, for better or worse that's up to you. But to claim that it was the norm and how it was is just plain wrong, and that was my point. You can't just claim the house rules you and some other people followed were what everyone was doing.
I also know, yes I'm a vocal minority here but you also advertise this to the opposition. If this was made in the same way with with models so you could look at the screen and see the enemy, and was advertised as, "You remember sneaking looks at the screen to see the enemy? Well heres your game! ETC" you would have a hell lot more people stating that point of view.
I'm also going to point out how I think this is a gimmick made by some devs who couldn't figure out what types of skins to use, what atmosphere the fps would be(future,ww2,modern,etc) so instead they just used none.
If anything someone would have done something like Goldeneye Source, some sort of redo of those old school fps(goldeneye/perfect dark/ other james bond games/time splitters/any other I've forgotten)
Edit: Maybe I'm wrong and this was the plan all along, I still can't but help think it's possible it's all just a loophole to not having player models.
It was a rule created by players. It was also the norm. There were more people who complained about screen cheating/looking/peaking then people who admitted to doing it while playing. Between my own anecdotal evidence and reading game forums for many years the majority opinion is that screen cheating is frowned upon. The situation was so commonplace that the act was given various names, players discouraged it in many ways including taping cardboard barriers to TVs, and a game like Screencheat can be released to praise for its creative take on the phenomena.
I am also a "screencheater". I have to explain to people that I literally cannot NOT see their portion of the screen even if I only look directly at my own. It's in my peripheral vision and cannot be ignored. I see where you're coming from with the game design angle: all information is there to see for everyone and players will take advantage of that. But as others have pointed out the design choice of having 4 players on the same screen was out of necessity rather than a purely game design decision back in the 90''s, as evidenced by online console games only letting you see your own screen. If 2-4 people wanted to play and they each have their own perspective and the console can only connect to one TV then their was only one solution. Games and consoles like Halo on Xbox introduced LAN play that allowed you to connect multiple Xboxs and TVs allowing more people to play, and also circumvent screen cheating.

Play the game. You don't even need to play it, just watch some people playing it on youtube. As a screen cheater and someone who claims to understand game design I'm sure you'll see that this game is built around not being able to see your opponent but being able to see their screen. The game is made to appeal to those that excel at screen cheating, a niche gameplay style in online FPS games.
Now that's your tinfoil hat talking
..But seriously this is basically game designed around cheating in order to win. I like it, it's fresh and straight forward. I mean when almost every modern FPS has a plethora of mods/cheats/hacks or "OP" things/tactics that people use, which cause many to complain about... it's nice there's a game specifically created for people who like cheating/being "unethical". Even so, it's still a fun game lol. I tried playing it without looking at other people's screens and you literally cannot win. It's also hilarious watching how others try to deal with people looking at their screens. One game 2 dudes just stared at the floor the entire time and would only look up when someone got near em. Then when they did the other 2 guys would immediately bee line for em.
It's really funny when people complain about what others do... the game is about cheating in order to win there's no point to not cheating lol.
Jesus with that logic lets just cut his hands off and call it a day!
Right, and I still think the description is stupid. It simply is not true. You are all giving your opinions. Not saying the game, or the idea, or the name, just the description.
Here is an example.

I already cited a source where the numbers were split evenly 40/60 and here is a thread i dug up with similar results.
Well you are watching his screen because you're using the same screen. If you know the level and radar at all you could know where they are anyways, so it's funny that people think it's a big deal to me. I don't get it.
