But I can't respect the drama about it.
I think there should be some kind of balance in the game industry. For every 10 serious games, there should be 2 comedy games.
That's really all Saints Row was. The crazy was just ramped up each time.
If you kept up with the gaming news, there was some corporate politics involved in the creation of SR3. Any serious story that Volition thought of was considered "too dark" by THQ, who were on the verge of bankruptcy. That's why you got an invisible Gat death and a pissed-off Shaundi.
I think there is a place for both. SR3 is my favorite of all, in part because it has a good balance of silly and realism, (i hate the word realism in video games.) I have enjoyed them all and i enjoy this one as well. I still think SR3 was way, way, way, more fun than GTA4.
With that said i would love a return to a more crime/gang based game like we saw in 2 and 3.
What SR was is what SR is now, they're just using more recent references.
Case in point, the gangs in SR1 were broad stereotypes. Los Carnales are running around in zoot suits, for gods sake. Who the ♥♥♥♥ wears that ♥♥♥♥ but hipsters trying to be retro? Westside Rollers were an obvious jab at Fast and Furious. And Vice Kings were "music industry thugs" made popular by many a rapper with claims of being "hard". Did you ever notice the running animation when you break into a store in SR1 after hours and rob the safe and you're carrying the "goods"? It's the same as the crack head at the start of Friday. The boss criticized Luz's fashion sense. And it only gets worse from there.
SR2's gangs were all clearer movie references. Brotherhood,The Warriors. Sons of Samedi, the drug gang from Predator 2. Ronin,Crazy 88 from Kill Bill. Hey,remember the boss fight with the voodoo priest who attacks you with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MAGIC!?! TOTALLY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SERIOUS,RIGHT!?! Remember when you base jumped THROUGH an exploding building instead of OUT of an exploding building? Oh,and lets not forget SPRAYING ♥♥♥♥ ALL OVER EVERYTHING WITH AN ANGRY MIME!!!! Oh,and remember Aisha's death scene? The one that was like something out of an anime? Have you ever even seen an anime? ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ noobs, man.
Oh,remember when you rescued Gat at the hospital? How ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ridiculous you looked wheeling his ass down a hallway while shooting Ronin? Yeah. Serious ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gangsta story. ♥♥♥♥ you.
Remember the Destory UFO? It was supposed to have a laser and missiles but they couldn't get them to work in SR2. Sound familiar? It's the load out to the VTOL in SR3! The only reason SR2 wasn't more insane is they really couldn't make it more insane. Remember the Real Bots factory? Remember how you got the chief of police as a homie to help you kill cops?
Saints Row was NEVER serious. You just didn't get the joke.
SR2 was hooked
SR3 Still hooked : Missed the Getting drunk and other stuff, and really no bling, but other than that it was all good. What happen to "freckle ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥"
SR4 - still hooked and loved the lore "an how the brought back gat was funny" and "F--- Cancer"
lol
SR GOOH made me laugh, and really enjoyed the game: even thought missing the customization part: for a short game it was entertaining.
