How is that bragging lol? Some text on a screen isn't that impressive.
There are achievements in the new port, but the Nightmare achievement only applies to beating a single level. And according to the achievement list the hardest one is Untouchable, which is basically doing a no-death speedrun across 8 sequential levels on at least Ultra-Violence difficulty.
Also there are no hidden achievements, and the others are mostly gimmicks like "kill 4 enemies with one Super Shotgun blast", so unless they add more in the future there's not many crazy achievements right now.
Achievement hunters lol losers.
Achievements related to challenges can also be "tricked".
We used to be glad to finish a game in the hardest difficulty and it was just for our own pleasure, not bragging about it on a profile...
Then I installed the VR mod, to get it in the VR. And boy is that totally far more fun to play than almost any VR game that is there (except Half-Life Alyx).
For few years I have hold off to even install Doom 3 VR, as I played the Doom 3 through just maybe twice, but started many times. Just can't withstand the "Half-Life like" approach.
Doom 2016 I have played through once, but playing second time but with very slow progress as it just doesn't have the horror part in it.
The Doom 2016 ruined the Doom by making you generate health by kills, to have the glory kill mechanism, that is practically 1-tap-kill function.
And the whole gameplay is really two things: 1) The story and 2) combo meter to hit the enemies in such order that your ADHD gets kicks.
The Doom 2016 Eternal is even more horrible. I played it only maybe 30-60 minutes, and...
What in the first page is talked about Painkiller, yeah. Doom 2016 is closest to the Painkiller than anything else really.
I have played Serious Sam episode 1 and Serious Sam Episode 2 through many times. And those are not about horror, not about exploration. Those are pure and simple action/shooting games with fun gameplay. The Serious Sam 3 is excellent in VR. Those are best in LAN, where you get more and more hordes and you just brainlessly shoot and try to survive. So it is more like a zombie games these days.
Doom is still best, and Doom II improves it by continuing the story.
And it is sad that what was done to Doom Guy in these 2016 reboots and all. Even the Doom 3 is just wrong, but still closer to what it should be.
Reminds well about HALO game, where it was about exploration and surviving, fun game the original, but then IMHO it went downhill by sudden shocking popularity.
At 90's and early noughs, I didn't understand people who kept playing Doom almost every month or weekly. "Does it run Doom?" was a joke. But now I understand it far better, because that game made so many things right, and kept it right.
my 2 cents....
At least they provide something different and new that is somewhat enjoyable although I must say I am not a big fan of VR games in general.
I also agree with your comparison here. Have the same impression about DE.
I also think while Doom 3 was not polished game it still comes closer to what Doom was than any of the newer versions.
The problem with never 2016 and DE is, they have an identity crisis.
They dont know what they want, they dont know what they are, they dont know what else they could do with the IP. So they just bunch together some crazy very very simple ideas and use shortcuts wherever possible.
That's why we have that useless fortress with that teleporter. Cause devs did not know how to make the story coherent and explain how the player gets from map1 to map2.
Been there done that. Back in the 90s. I achieved it for myself. Not to brag about it on forums and show people with a little icon and some text lol.
