What they save in production and distribution goes to Steam and other platforms. I read an article about that many years ago. It was roughly 30% for physical distribution, and that's exactly what Valve started taking from them. Probably because Valve looked at those numbers and set their fee accordingly. So this whole promise of lower prices for digital games was a lie from the start, and they all knew it.

Pricing is not about covering costs anyway. They price their games for as much as they think they can get from us. And obviously they think Doom is big enough of a name to ask for more than other games.
€ 80 is absurd. There's no way to justify it. Especially not for what amounts to a 10-15 hour (if we're lucky) single player game.

I have no problem with full price for a 10-15 hour single player game and I frankly find this relatively new notion that every game has to offer absurd amounts of play time rather horrible. We never had a problem with full price for a good single player experience. Think of games like Doom 3, Half-Life 1+2, Bioshock 1-3, Alan Wake, Max Payne, Resident Evil and so many more. Did you not think those were worth the money? And now that we have this open world trend, suddenly all games have to have 50 hours (which in many cases is to a large degree walking from A to B and generic filler quests ^^).

But what I have a problem with is to simply ask for more money than all other games. 60€ would be totally fine. 70€ would be acceptable. 80€ seems like an insult. :/
I can easily afford it, but I will wait for sale as I don't suffer from FOMO.
I have learned my lesson. Took me 30 years though XD.. But playing a game day one is so overrated. There are so many other things you can do. Just wait till the game is on sale and buy it then. If anything it will play better then day one anyway lol.

Dont fall for this trap!

Only idiots pre-order.
Wait for discount or torrent.
I will simply play it on Game Pass.

That's probably the main reasoning behind the pricing anyway, nudging people onto game pass. It's bad for the studios , but good for Micro$oft.

PC players have it anyway pretty good when it comes to pricing.
If you are willing to wait a few months after release, you can get most games for under $30.

Imagine being a Sony Pony or Xbot and realizing that there are literally zero good first party games, justifying buying those outdated consoles. Like the State of Play today was ruff. Sony literally gambled everything on live service, then canceled almost every live service game, because nobody wants it and now they have no games to bridge that gap for the next 5 years or so.

Imagine forcing Bluepoint to make a God of War live service game instead of a Bloodborne remake. Years wasted. 😅

waiting for sale, no other games are close to this price, i can wait to play a single player only game for cheaper.
if it'd had multiplayer, i "might" have bought it at full price, but SP only, nah.

Would you be more likely to buy the game if the price was rounded from 80 to 100?

obviously not, im UK, this game is £70 , which is £20 more than any other AAA game, they want to ask that much, then they shouldn't be to surprised, if many ppl hold off on it.

Games have cost 60 bucks for a long time ignoring inflation while everything else got more expensive. It was just a matter of time. Not that I'm thrilled, but that was to be expected.
stop defending that BS, they also have zero physical production cost and related expenses
imagine not knowing how much steam takes from every sale? oh you don't know? it's 30%

"Steam only takes 30% of the sales that happen on Steam."
