Playing through doom 3 and it's crazy how good this game is and true to the original
Wow is all I have to say about Doom 3. What a crazy interpretation of the OG doom and people should look to this about how to properly make a doom game. Proper horror survival and some campy elements thrown in. Comes as no surprise this was the last game with any real involvement from Carmack.

Doom 3 is underated but no way like 1&2. It suffers from not having a light, it's a dumb gameplay design to either use a light either use a weapon. I vaguely remind that a mod more or less fix it but still.

Otherwise it's, for me, a very good linear shooter, better than any new doom, but no way like 1&2.

I remember that, when the Doom3 beta came out you had to switch between your flashlight and a weapon. I think that actually added to the horror survival aspect and more jump scares. I wasn't a fan either but I see it's intention. The later versions of the game have it always on and there's just a meter where it can run out. I remember being absolutely terrified playing Doom3 when you had to switch between the light and the weapon. Because you would be fumbling around in the dark and bring up your flashlight right into a zombies face right in from of you, and you'd be constantly scared it was gonna happen again.

The newer dooms are super fruity and ♥♥♥♥♥ in comparison, like they don't want to hurt your feelings. Way too much focus on "cool" and rockstar vibes, it's super corny.

The problem with Doom 3 is in its horror elements. It is the scariest game in the series but it's not as cool and flashy as 1 and 2 and not even close to the newer games. In Doom 3 shooting demons is just not cool at all. It has solid horor atmosphere and dark and grounded level design but it lacks bombastic gameplay from the first two games. I still like it though.
I remember how scared i was to play it back in the day...

Doom 3 was also a very bad Doom game. It was a nice horror game but nothing like Doom.
It was for a reason hated by original Doom ferrets and those who consider it one or even the best Doom games, those are "younger" generation of gamers who at that time had Doom 3 as their first doom game ever. And that's why they loved it.

It's tough to compare any of the other Doom games to Doom 3. Like, Dark Ages is going for something a little different than the others, so was Eternal, but Doom 3 went for almost a different genre. That game was near as close to Resident Evil as it was to Doom.
I didn't hate it, it was just ... not at all what I expected from a Doom game. Sure was pretty in 2004 though (even though Far Cry AND Half-Life 2 came out that same year).

Probably its biggest sin is that it spawned that truly horrible movie. : p

Doom 3 actually has some dynamic gameplay, weapon and ammo management and a decent soundtrack, Dark Ages has absolutely none of that.

Dead Space felt like the game Doom 3 really wanted to be. Shame EA didn't let Motive try to make another one. : \

Doom 3 was a technical masterpiece for its time (2004) with the lighting and shadows. In the original it had an element of horror where you had to choose between flashlight or weapon. Still there is much to kill in this game. Unfortunately the combat is a bit too slow. For example the shotgun has a large spread and drop-off and reloading takes ages.

I replay the game regularly but wish then that the combat is a bit faster since by now you know what is coming.

The BFG edition improved the graphics a bit and solved issues with modern resolutions. It also destroyed the unique flashlight choice mechanic. There is more ammo available now which is fine.
