But yeah the potshotting fodder is a thing. You really have to manage fodder in this and can't just ignore it on the field.
The potshots thing, I think it's all part of the "classic doom meets bullethell" aspect. You keep your head on a swivel and be ready to dodge, parry, jump over and eat some fire, jam what you can back down the enemy's throat, don't let anything red touch you, squish the fodder so it doesn't chip away at you. I agree it can be annoying sometimes but I factor in the need mitigate it by keeping on top of armor/health.
Decino got a video on that when he was talking about difficulties in Doom.
That's the case for Doom Eternal.
The Dark Ages has the advantage that melee can get ammo without needed to kill, allowing you to get ammo from heavy demons and bosses. So actually, it doesn't even need to grunt enemies beyond health.
