[SOLVED] Stuck on main menu on black screen after changing graphics settings in game (Linux)
Hi, guys. I need help to get the game running again.

I have an AMD 7700xt, ryzen7 9800x3D, 32GB of ram and I'm using Linux Mint.

I was able to play the game and finish it, but yesterday I started exploring the graphics options in the menu for things I didn't quite understand (like frame generation) and after that, after the logos the main menu goes black and the music plays, the mouse is visible but not interactive with anything. I'm using proton 9.0-4 compatibility mode which is what I used to play the first time, I tried others but the result is the same.

I tried deleting the game's specific settings to return to the default mode and still couldn't. I also put the command "+reset_config" in the game's startup options and I can't anymore.

Please help me. Thank you.

I beg to differ. I have ran this game under Windows 10 pro. Now that drivers and stuff have come out, I am actually getting slightly better performance under linux. Out of the box, may work for some, but instead of the plug and play/fail windows has these days. If your willing to actually computer and not rely on AI bullspit to do everything for you, you can get a better experience under linux, not huge mind you, like maybe 10 fps or so but still. Don't shame the penguin just because it isn't all rainbows and skittles like windows.

My apologies for the edit, I am still just waking up here, @Doom Slayer, I have a video in my profile I put up yesterday. The gameplay is all under Manjaro Linux, no upscaling or frame gen. It isn't 3000+ fps like some would prefer, but it is more than playable at max settings.

Install the amd86 and i386 .debs (Ubuntu) or x86_64.rpm (Fedora) from the latest release https://github.com/GPUOpen-Drivers/AMDVLK/releases
In the Launch Options for Doom, put the following command lines:

Ubuntu:
VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/etc/vulkan/icd.d/amd_icd64.json:/etc/vulkan/icd.d/amd_icd32.json radv_force_64k_sparse_alignment=true %command%

Fedora:
VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/etc/vulkan/icd.d/amd_icd64.json radv_force_64k_sparse_alignment=true %command%

For Arch:
Install AMDVLK and to be safe lib32-amdvlk
VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/amd_icd64.json
radv_force_64k_sparse_alignment=true %command%

Also under the Game Files, under DoomTheDarkAges under common wherever you have them installed to, under properties browse game files to get there quickly, there is a folder called amd-ffx. In that folder is a DLL file, amd_fidelityfx_vk.dll. I put BAD behind the dll to disable it, rename it is all it needs to disable it. This brought performance up a lot and even FSR is working, not sure on Frame Gen as I don't run it.

Hope this helps.

Similar issue on Win11, I was playing for 38 hours perfectly before this small update came along.

Thank you very much for your response and for your time. Unfortunately, I was unable to resolve the issue (I tried to adapt the commands for Mint) and the problem persists.
Playing Doom Eternal here, I felt a slight performance gain, but still a gain.
Regretably Dark Ages continues to have a black menu. Maybe an update has caused this, idk.
I will continue to look for a solution and post it here, hope it helps anyone who is having the same problem.

Try renaming the amd_fidelityfx_vk.dll to amd_fidelityfx_vk.dllBAD or something. That fixed a lot of issues for me when it first came out on linux.

I had done that but the difference was that Launcher no longer opened. I even used virtualboxe to make a machine with windows and gave the same thing.
I'm thinking it's something of the game. I managed to run everything right when I played. I had to only change the experimental proton to 9.
I deleted all settings I made, game is on default. Then as Windows guys are also going through this ... IDK.

Thank you again.

Well evidently they can cause they stated they already finished the game
OP - pretty sure user config is stored in cloud as well if you have cloud saves on, even though you've deleted the config file cloud syncs it back to your local install

Maybe turn off cloud saves, delete the user config file, go again ?

Thanks for the reply.
I disabled cloud save for Dark Ages to test and still couldn't do it.
And now to make matters worse Denuvo blocked me for 24 hours lol

Switching proton versions will trip it once you go past 5 changes.

I tried so many times that denuvo blocked me without a set time. I'm afraid I won't be able to play anymore.

If you get the game running again go to the game's local files and go to the "amd-ffx" folder and change the "amd_fidelityfx_vk" file to be ".bak" instead of ".dll". Then start the game up, turn off framegen, turn the game off afterwards and change the file back to ".dll". The game should be fine now and don't enable frame gen untill its been fixed.

Thank you very much for your reply, I feel like this is the solution. I did it here and now I just need Denuvo to give access to the game I purchased.
