I dont get it.
This game makes me feel angry because of its game design. I just don't get it.

I hope you guys can help me understand why i'm just playing the game wrong or just not understanding basic game design. I know a lot of people really love this game and i wish i did to.

Note: I haven't proof read this so my English is gonna be ass. Also this isn't intended to be a rage bait. But feel free to spam clown emotes.

If this game didnt cost $119.99 AU for the standard edition i would be less harsh on this game but its got so much stuff i hate in it.

Minor gripes:

- Why is there turret sections in my doom game that costs $119.99. This feels so un-
doom. I found these sections to be boring and insulting.

- The game feels like it teats you like a baby who cant tell what the green parry light on
enemies means. Thank god you can turn off tutorial messages.

- The cutscenes are cool and well done but i don't come to DOOM for a story i come to rip
and tear.

- Glory kills are practically gone and replaced with a melee system that i honestly think is
far more repetitive than the glory kill animations.

- This game doesn't feel like a doom game to me

- Trying to hard to be cool imo

- Enemies feel less important and more like meat walls to fill empty space in the arenas

- i really hate the design of the main villain it looks really goofy to me.

- It feels like this game doesn't have input buffering

Movement:
I really hate what they did with the movement in this game. I much prefer a velocity based movement system with greater freedom and skill expression. To me the movement feels like the most on rails experience I've ever had in an fps game.

The weapons:
I really love how the guns feel in this game but the amount of overlap in their functionality is crazy. It feels like the weapon selection is far less focused then previous titles. I hate that i cant weapon swap like in doom eternal or 2016. I get that this is a different game but it just feels wrong not being able to weapon switch faster. Also there have been many times where i want to shield bash, switch weapons, throw the shield and block but the player is doing some other interaction and i can't do anything else.

Melee:
I straight up hate the melee in this game. The slow mo is so annoying and the melee system feels like it has no room for skill expression. I dont have much else to say on this, i really just hate this system and its CRIMINAL THAT THEY REMOVED GLORY KILLS.

The shield:
Parrying attacks just feels so repetitive to me and un-fun. Even with the lowest parry window it feels barley skill based at all. Also parrying makes enemies feel really similar in terms of their function in the game world. You can deal with a hell knight the same way as a Komodo.
I really hate how fast the shield breaks, ITS A SHIELD THE THING YOU DO WITH A SHIELD IS BLOCK ATTACKS AND IT CANT EVEN DO THAT WITHOUT BREAKING. There are times it feels like the game really wants me to block with all the projectiles having aggressive homing and i just get punished for block projectiles that have so much overlap i cant strafe it.
I just wish the shield had more to it. Also it feels like i cant use the shield some times and the game just eats my input.

The enemies:
I cannot fathom why ID software though reusing enemy types for mini bosses and armoured variants was a good idea. I also hate that so many enemies make you wait for their attacks to either get into parrying range so that you can continue shooting them. Demons like the Caco demon just feel like an unfun waiting game. There are very few enemies in this game that feel like they do something different than the rest.
ALSO WHY THE ♥♥♥♥ WOULD YOU BRING BACK THE MOST ANNOYING ENEMIES FROM DOOM ETERNAL. Many of the higher tier demons just feel the same when fighting them.
Also i felt that getting shot by enemies from off screen has been a real problem for me on nightmare. This game wants you to be slower but it also wants you to have an in depth knowledge of the locations of all enemies in the arena.
I never had this problem in eternal am i just bad?
There are far more annoying enemies in this game than prior games. And the new enemies feel like they don't fit in a doom game.

Level Design:
The level design feels like a huge downgrade from prior entries. Its just a ton of flat areas with some cover. Speaking of this is the only modern doom game where it felt like some times i NEED to take cover to avoid damage. I know this game works with a much more grounded approach for the game play but i just wish there was more verticality.
I really hate what they did to the traversal mechanics taking practically all skill out of it making all feel samey and boring. The platforming just feels so on rails.

Level Gimmicks:
Dragon sections suck ass and i don't hate the mech sections. I really wish these Gimmicks only showed up in 1 level each. Again i know there are people who like these sections but i just hate them.

Performance:
Performance is great if you have a really good pc and if not sucks to suck i guess. I can barely get 60fps at 1080p on an RTX 3070! the performance for me has been abysmal.
Mandatory raytracting just sucks imo and locks so many systems out of playing this game.

I'm sorry guys but i just don't get it i think.
What am i doing wrong?

I personally just find them really boring and i felt like they shouldn't be in a doom game imo.
I tried to check your playtime but couldn't find the game on in your steam library so I don't know how much this would apply.
I felt a lot of what you are feeling, sans some things like poor PC performance. I felt it hard for the first couple hours of gameplay. That's the time the game holds your hand.
I think it was about chapter 8 or so when everything clicked. Right, it wasn't the doom games I'm used to but it's got real fun, real quick. The mechanics and choices that I thought were odd and dumb I'm now using to my advantage.
I believe you will find, just as I have, that the further you get into the game, the more fast-paced, fast moving, blow ♥♥♥♥ up, make a mess it actually is. It's chaos at many points and a good chaos.
I feel like eventually the parry system, melee, and gunpaly bloomed and became crazy fun once I had it all in my hands and it became even more fun with the configurable melee and shield "runes".

If you aren't already by chapter 12, I'd say keep at it and keep an open mind about the creative direction this doom takes and leave some of that previous Doom aside for now.

Adding also that I was upset about the glory kills. However, they still exist for the bigger deamons, just jump and E. There are far more glory kills demons and more often the further you go. The smaller fodder can be used to your advantage depending on your skills chosen.

I will mention as well that I turned some "assist" things off in the settings and turned my parry color to purple. The green was too harsh and unimersive. There's also the always run which I found worked much better in making it feel fast-paced without having to fumble around.

I'll also add the that level secrets are very very good later in the game. Like "whoa" kinda good.

So far in chapter 20 and literally was just handed a new enemy. Got the final gun in chapter 18 I think, and last shield rune shortly after.

Ive got it through family sharing at the moment. I'm on chapter 19 atm. I also restarted my play through around chapter 17 as i felt i had a better handle on the game and decided to give it another go.

I agree with changing the parry colour. its a really good addition. I changed mine to a gold like colour just because it required me to pay more attention to projectiles of a similar colour and it felt like the colour worked a lot better with the color pallet of the demons.

Well it's either use the turrets or we can't kill Demon Titans outside of the mech. Very annoying in the last game we can't kill Demon Titans in Eternal.

Thats fair, i just wish there was a more creative way of killing them in first person.

Lol, you're not meant to need cover, you're meant to dodge and weave between the barrage of incoming fireballs, you know, like in that classic Doom game, Doom, and it's sequel, Doom II.

You can avoid all the projectiles in the game simply by running away from them.

I also went for an gold colour, looked really good.

I personally just found that the game can sometimes have so many projectiles coming at you with really aggressive homing that it makes it really hard to dodge them. I wish i didn't have to disengage with combat to wait for the projectiles to go past. But i will admit that's on me as a skill issue.
