I felt a lot of what you are feeling, sans some things like poor PC performance. I felt it hard for the first couple hours of gameplay. That's the time the game holds your hand.
I think it was about chapter 8 or so when everything clicked. Right, it wasn't the doom games I'm used to but it's got real fun, real quick. The mechanics and choices that I thought were odd and dumb I'm now using to my advantage.
I believe you will find, just as I have, that the further you get into the game, the more fast-paced, fast moving, blow ♥♥♥♥ up, make a mess it actually is. It's chaos at many points and a good chaos.
I feel like eventually the parry system, melee, and gunpaly bloomed and became crazy fun once I had it all in my hands and it became even more fun with the configurable melee and shield "runes".
If you aren't already by chapter 12, I'd say keep at it and keep an open mind about the creative direction this doom takes and leave some of that previous Doom aside for now.
Adding also that I was upset about the glory kills. However, they still exist for the bigger deamons, just jump and E. There are far more glory kills demons and more often the further you go. The smaller fodder can be used to your advantage depending on your skills chosen.
I'll also add the that level secrets are very very good later in the game. Like "whoa" kinda good.
So far in chapter 20 and literally was just handed a new enemy. Got the final gun in chapter 18 I think, and last shield rune shortly after.
You can avoid all the projectiles in the game simply by running away from them.
I also went for an gold colour, looked really good.
I personally just found that the game can sometimes have so many projectiles coming at you with really aggressive homing that it makes it really hard to dodge them. I wish i didn't have to disengage with combat to wait for the projectiles to go past. But i will admit that's on me as a skill issue.
