Opinions on weapons and their variants

As the title states, I wanted to get some people's opinions on the overall weapon balance and their respective alts.

I'm still making progress in the campaign but after max upgrading some select weapons and looking into the alts, I'm struggling to see the point of some if the other versions feel like straight upgrades like the Pulverizer and Skull Crusher. I understand some are used in niche situations but generally I'm just sticking to a certain type for most encounters and only using the originals or alts to spice things up.
