Think i'm gonna rank TDA above Eternal for me. If it's just the 2016 trilogy it'll be
1. TDA
2. Eternal
3. 2016

Decided to reinstall Eternal and play a mission or two on Nightmare. Not gonna lie, slowly starting to prefer TDA's gameplay. More running and gunning on TDA surprisingly, even with the parrying and melee focus. Actually, it feels like TDA is even more aggressive in terms of combat compared to Eternal's. Really feels closer to classic doom with how much strafing, running, and gunning is involved. Don't really know where people are getting that TDA is slower, it still feels fast. Guess the lack of verticality, wider arenas, and larger maps does make it slow for some It isn't as high-octane as Eternal's but the combat is still intense. A lot more enemies in each combat encounter as well.
If it helps, there is an option to always keep sprint on. Actually made the game better for me. I do understand the slow-motion parrying and melee. Didn't really think much of it when I finished TDA on nightmare, until I found there was a mod that completely disables it. Made the game a lot more faster, and better, as a result.
The toning down of glory-kills and focus on melee-executions definitely helps with the combat flow. Like they took the satifying feeling of using the blood-punch from Eternal and built the gameplay of TDA around it.
Looking forward to an update to make disabling the slow-mo official instead of relying on mods.

Too early to properly rank Dark Ages, will I still fire it up randomly in a year like I did 1000 different times with Doom, Doom 2, Quake2? Only time will tell.

I can definitely safely put Eternal on the bottom of the list though. Doom3 might go in a different pile all together, but higher than Eternal either way.

1. Eternal
2. The Dark Ages
3. 2016

Feels weird trying to rank anything so much newer against the original two.

I still play the first 2 Doom games to this day. In fact I have an old school windows 95 PC in my office just for playing the original Doom games like they were meant to be played.

Doom 3 is only good game rest is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ zone
Doom 2
Doom
Doom Eternal
Doom: The Dark Ages
Doom 2016
Doom 64
Doom 3

I like them all, but that's my personal preference in terms of what games both impressed me most on first play and had the most replayability. The novelty of Doom: The Dark Ages might give me a bias towards it, meaning it might drop below Doom 2016 in time, but the more I play it the more I enjoy the combat loop even if I wish they didn't severely reduce the amount of glory kills versus the other two in the recent trilogy.

Doom 64
1. Doom
2. Doom II (arguably better than 1 really, but 1 gives the best Doom nostalgia feels)
3. Final/64/mods and so on - ie everything else broadly filed under classic doom
4. Doom III + RoE

Special mention for 2016 for the valiant attempt to be an actual Doom game within modern console-friendly constraints, however the pacing is ruined at a fundamental level by small but pervasive problems that are all but invisible to newer gamers. This can gradually turn it into a bit of an agonizing slog if you love the originals - it does for me. Even though there's a lot that's right about it, it tails off. Such a shame as so much love has obviously gone into making it.

TDA fixes some of these fundamentals without making a big fuss of it, which is probably why it plays much better than other nudoom for a lot of us coming at it from a classic fan point of view, even if the huge changes make it seem like it totally shouldn't, at all. Far better than it should be "on paper" for this classic doom player.

It's hard to decide where TDA fits in at the moment. Way above the other nudooms right now, we will see what replay value there is and how well the first impression lasts - if things continue as they are, above or below Doom III. That is not "faint praise", breaking onto the list with the original doom games would be quite a big deal for my list.

As for the spin-offs, I bounced off the Doom RPGs, they didn't appeal to me conceptually, but they were a pipe dream of Mr Carmack so they deserve the respect of a passing mention, even if it is to say "nope not for me". I am sure somebody loves them.

That's all of Doom :stok:

Doom 2 will always be my favorite, maybe because of nostalgia, but I played way more of that than the original Doom as a kid.
