Supposedly TDA started out as a Quake reboot too, but who knows if that's true.
I prefer Quake 2 as well though, would love a modern reboot.
Last Hope is Machinegames making a Quake game.

The way the industry works is that since games cost around $100M USD there is no incentive to be creative or experimental. What usually happens is that the studios are kept around (not necessarily the talent in them) working on the same IP as the publisher pushes anti-consumer practices that only get more aggressive per entry.
So Id Studios will do Doom until it is no longer profitable or finds an "audience" of people who are willing to put up with the abuse similar to Call of Duty, Star Wars and FIFA.
