This is a thought experiment only, because it has piqued my curiosity

Say I buy a game on Steam, request a refund on browser, while the steam client is completely cut off from internet, basically offline before the refund is processed, how would Steam know that I no longer own the game if I stay offline? Would I still be able to play the refunded game until I go back online?

Well with gamestop, you could go and buy a copy of a game you had already but say the disc was scratch and didn't work. You swap the disc out and take the game back with the receipt and get your money back. Downside is if your new copy was messed up, you have no refund option.

I imagine steam would eventually require an internet check.

Denuvo anticheat is kernel level, but Denuvo antipiracy is not. This game has no kernel level access whatsoever; it doesn't include Denuvo anticheat for an obvious reason: no multiplayer.

IDK if Denuvo verifies your purchase every time you play or if it only does it once; I haven't been watching all the internet server queries my computer makes whenever I play, but that would be how someone with more OCD about this issue would check. Assuming you disconnect your computer from the internet entirely AND Denuvo only checks verification of your install on the first boot, which you've done, it might still work, but likely only until you launch the game while online. It seems like an excessive hassle versus just paying for Gamepass if you're low on funds or buying the game on Steam, but hey, it MIGHT work. Maybe.

Not something I'd recommend or condone, but if you're so cheap you need to justify outright software theft, you can go ahead and try.

I'm saying it hypothetically, but seeing how most modern western games are slop I wouldn't call it theft if one were to do that.

Wrong. Denuvo anti-tamper does not have kernel access and does not require a constant internet connection.
