DOOM: The Dark Ages

DOOM The Dark Ages? Hexen, or QUAKE 1 sequel preferred.
Fusing this Dark Ages motif with Doom makes it feel like a calculated stand-in for what could have been a fully fleshed-out Hexen, or maybe a Quake 1 sequel (it had many medieval elements.)

I hope we still get a proper Hexen game, and a unique QUAKE 1-based (pre-strogg) sequel, too. And if so I hope they are darker and grittier and scarier, and aim for a more realistic and grounded look than this. The new Dooms are thematically dark, gory and edgy, sure, but graphically they have taken on an arcadey, gamey (read: cartoonish/caricatured) art style with big colorful telegraphed abilities and enemies that are just slightly different from the previous games. Sure they translated well from OG Doom to Doom 2016 in it's scope, but here is more of the same; the monsters and many elements of the game seem to be designed with generic "readability" in mind, making sure they have particular shape and size, and color hue for the "brand" and "game loop", rather than being some highly-detailed horrific menaces in an immersive atmosphere with a good mix of hard and creepy soundtrack. The art style reminds me of the Xbox 360 era, or mobile games, even if the shading and overall presentation is nice, it all seems too soft and almost toy-like.

All I can say is, I hope the modern id goes back and studies, in detail, what QUAKE 1 was, and use that as the basis for their next game.

I kind of liked it when a big part of the idSoft identity was pushing cutting edge graphics engines in the games of their times. It's a bit disheartening to see they have settled with this for now. I'm fine with admitting the new Doom Dark Ages is not for me.

I get it, this storyline might work with the lore established in Doom 2016 and Eternal, but whatever happened to Doom Guy? I kind of liked going into the old games knowing I wasn't an all-powerful godlike. There was a dynamic of horror in previous games that doesn't hit here, because you go in knowing you are the chosen one in a spaceship or whatever. Power armor, chainsaw shields, and shotguns in the "Dark Ages?"

As for being a prequel, does Dark Ages even really tell us the origin of the Doom Slayer? Is he an angel, or a human man, chosen by God to fight?

I didn't much like Quake even though it was the first true 3D FPS. I did love Hexen though, so a new Hexen would not be bad.

This game honestly feels more like Hexen anyways. Gauntlet, flail, shield, spike gun, chainball... c'mon.
I would love a Quake single player game, by exactly this team. Obviously the speed and movement would be different, but this is already so close in some ways (aesthetic, world, encounters) you can almost reach out and kill a strogg. Just needs taking Quakeward

Wouldn't say no to a tech8 Hexen either
