Melee required?
I love DOOM, but I need to know if melee is required in this game to get more ammo/health.

I absolutely despise the mechanic and don't play any of the recent DOOM games because of it. Does it still exist in this iteration where you are REQUIRED to melee to get refillables?

I hope not, but from watching the live game play it certainly seems melee is yet again a required mechanic for some dumb reason.

Dude! Doom had melee! They gave you a chainsaw, and fists, and...

Also, melee isn't so bad! It's just like guns but it's much shorter range and it's not as fun!

You just don't want to buy a new graphics card! That's why you're so mad at Doom being a garbage franchise now!

This is pretty much a melee only game. Playing on nightmare right now and half the time im just shield bashing or punching.

This is the Eternal haters fault. Now you get like infinite ammo, weapons don't matter, dash replaced with sprint, no verticality and normal melee now deals damage but nobody ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ enjoys using normal melee as main damage in a shooter.

Damn, that sounds bad. Eternal ammo stinginess was bad, but it was still a shooter first and foremost. I also enjoyed the berserk buff in Doom (2016), that was super fun. But having to be in melee mode all the time is not really Doom anymore.

Bruv you just needed to learn how to use the chainsaw. In Enteral you literally have infinite ammo if you just cut down an imp every here n there.

So you're saying that in Eternal you can run out of ammo unless you do the thing that gives you ammo.

But you had to use the chainsaw over and over again in just one bigger encounter to refill ammo. In 2016 the ammo management was much better in that the game provided the pistol with infinite ammo. The pistol alone made Doom (2016) a much better Doom game than Eternal imo.

This is in the DLC, at this point you have all weapons and likely all ammo upgrades. Then surely you don't need the chainsaw that often anymore.
Melee is good, so stratifying killing the Demons with Melee kills and seeing their gore all over the place. However they have weaken the guns in progress. Earth Always has better guns.

Yes there's melee. Yes it's required to get health back. And melee uses ammo that you have to pick up off the ground (which I've always thought is weird)
Thankfully it is required and better yet ABSOLUTELY! needed to progress. Your ammo, Armour and health drops are tied to it. Without you will not progress.

You’re playing the game wrong then. SSG on heavy demons is better than using melee.

You need all. I upgraded my Combat Shotgun atm because it's still a good mid range weapon... it also sets demons on fire.

It's not like Eternal where the main focus was on quickswitching. Here you alternate between melee, shield and gun.
Wow I really appreciate everyone's feedback thank you very much. It looks like this game is not for me sadly. While I do love a good chainsaw, I hate being forced into a mechanic that kills the flow of the game play.

I'll watch more videos to see if I might want to dabble.
