It’s ok if I start with this game? Devs said that this game was more story based and I like that.

i wouldn't buy a doom game for "story"
Probably you will miss some references from past games but the story in large should make sense on it's own.

Nobody has played it so it's hard to say.

Any Doom game I've played, and I've played them all, can be played as a stand alone title. If you really dig it you can go read up on the lore and get a little more out of it, but it's only a little more. These games are about murdering demons, it's never that deep.
It's totally okay to start with this one. But if it hooks you and you want to replay the others, Doom 2016 might feel kind of underwhelming in comparison. Still good but two steps back in game mechanics. How you would like Eternal after this one is anyone's guess. It's very different but similar in complexity, at least that's what I get from the early reviews.

THIS.

Doom is not at all about the story, it's much more focused on gameplay.
In my opinion, all Doom games share something that I like to call the "ID Software flow".
There is just something about how fluid these games play from a pacing standpoint, that is not reached by any other fps game (-franchise).
If you get it, I hope you enjoy, and if so, play Doom 2016 & then Eternal afterwards :)
(Eternal after 2016 in a necessity imo, as Eternal's gameplay feels like the natural evolution of 2016).
Yes, you can jump on any doom game and you don't need to know any story.
All you need to know hell is open, you're there to kill demons and story continues.

From a narrative Standpoint it's actually better to start with this game as it takes place before Doom 2016 and Eternal.
I feel you will be fine, you can connect the pieces when you play Doom 2016 and Eternal

specially Eternal

Hard disagree.

2016 the far more superior game vs Eternal in combat, traversal, and its biggest strength - level design. Its overall tone is more "horror" like with complex labrynthine, cohesive maps and well placed arenas. Its combat is pure DOOM: grab lots of guns and ammo and blast demons, find far more well hidden secrets, and explore every inch to find your way through its twisted mazes. Simple. Doom. Tried and true timeless game design. Also music is far better.

Eternal was chasing modern day COD casuals with its abrupt, hard lean into a cartoony comicbook, cheesy B-movie tone (2016 was always far more subtle here), its headless chicken on meth, hoppy hoppy, flippy flippy, twirly wirly COD gameplay nonsense (which is inferior mechanic-wise for a DOOM game), constant limitations/running out of ammo just to force a limited use chainsaw for "reasons" that requires a cooldown - on a chainsaw - and its out of LEFT FIELD sudden lore dump about Maykrs and Argentas and blah blah blah.

Also level design isnt near the superior labyrinths of 2016 where Eternal's much more simplified map sizes although being bigger at first glance is illusory by use of very tiny maze corridors and braindead puzzles only used to interconnect its CONSTANT placement and reliance on hoppy horde mode arenas.

Id is not returning to Eternal's goofiness and heavy reliance on arenas, but 2016's grounded gameplay and level design for good reason.

The Dark Ages will have a lot more in common with Eternal than 2016. Don't let aesthetics and lack of platforming fool you.

As to your opinion on what game is better: it's an opinion. Some share it, some don't.

As others said, you can totally start with this one.
Ignore those who say:

If a game has a story campaign, it can be bought for a story.
Doom had always a lore and universe. So yeah get this one if you are interested in the story. But if you get hooked on it, be warned that if you want to play Eternal and Doom 2016 after that, those games will all feel very very different.

Also:
If you start with The Dark Age: You will start with the story in chronological order and can go through Doom 2016 and last with Eternal
If you start with Doom 2016, you will go with release order, and you will have probalby some "ahaaaaa" moments when playing The dark ages remembering some parts from Doom 2016 and understand why those things looked like it did.

2016 COMBAT FAR SUPERIOR IN COMBAT COMPARED TO ETERNAL?
My brain is literally melting from all the stupid stuff I read on the TDA Steam discussions today.
In 2016 you can literally play trough the whole game without any tactics and SSG\Gauss Canon quickswitching.
In Eternal you need to actually get good to play trough the campaign on Nightmare.
Mrsska May 11 @ 11:08am
Eternal gameplay is more complex and fun. Quickswapping, taking down weakpoints, dashing, flamebelch freeze bomb grenade, + blood punch combo etc. You can do so many combos on enemies, in 2016, i only use micro missiles, ssg, and gauss cannon siege mode

The developers said that Doom: Eternal was sort of a first person take on a Devil May Cry if it were Doom.

Dark Ages is going to be a bullet hell that goes back to the slower, methodical pace of the original Doom - lots of side strafing back and forth.

If you want a game that's going to really challenge your mental Doom: Eternal on Nightmare is it. That games legit makes me feel like I need a nap after a 4 or 5 hour session, very few games do that to me. It requires real mental focus to complete the harder parts of the game.
