It's not the 90s and 2000s anymore and there are lots of free to play multiplayer shooter games that Doom multiplayer has to compete against.
People freaked out at the idea of anti-cheat being added to Eternal - possibly one of the reasons the devs dropped the interesting-sounding Invasion mode.
People would freak out at the idea of anti-cheat in Doom TDA multiplayer if there was to be such a mode. I think multiplayer in Doom games is now just more trouble than it's worth for the devs.
