DOOM: The Dark Ages

DOOM: The Dark Ages

Feels like the game is gonna be mid.
I played and love all the Doom games (kinda mixed with Doom 3) multiple times. 2016 was brilliant and Eternal took it up a notch in some areas but also kinda took a step back in other areas. To keep it short, Doom is a simple run n gun game. Complicating it with utility attacks and blocks and parries and Marauder spam and now we have a dragon and mech to ride in.... feels like they are running out of ideas so they keep trying to remix Eternal DLC but it just bogs it down under its own weight. It feels like Dark Ages is gonna be mid. I'm still gonna play it opening day but just not really hyped about it as much as I was to 2016 and Eternal.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I feel like they should have focused on Quake 5 instead or maybe even a Quake reboot with aliens instead of dragons.

No. I think it will be great but might have a few aspects I won't like. But I will know when I know.

Care to elaborate or just deny reality and hope for the best?

The set pieces, especially the dragon sections. They don't look fun to me. But I'd love to be surprised.

Otherwise, and I say that as a huge Eternal fan, I'm open to a radical change of gameplay. As long as it's still engaging and complex. A Doom Eternal 2 would have been the safe way to go, but a Doom 2016 2 would have been too. I want them to give me something fresh again. There's the risk of failure of course. But also the chance to create something great.

Hugo Martin said he wouldn't ever want to make the same game twice. He would be bored and that would be felt. I respect that attitude.

The preview IGN just posted makes the game look like it's a mix between Halo 3, Call of Duty and Dark Souls. 2016 and Eternal were great because it was Doom and kept things simple. Badass corridor shooter with demons. Done. Dark Ages looks like it wants to overcomplicate things just to be unique. It's gonna make subsequent playthroughs really dull and tedious when you have to parry stuff. The worst part about Eternal was the Marauder fights and it looks like that's what Dark Ages focused on the most.

100% agree. Eternal was so great and memorable because slayer didn't need a vehicle. Rather he was the vehicle. One way ticket to Mars? "Just launch me into the planet bro." Gigantic enemy the size of a skyscraper? "Lemme fight him on the rooftop." It was ridiculous and simple and worked. Mechs and dragons scream like its a completely different game. Parrying stuff screams Dark Souls and I loved Dark Souls but you don't mix pizza and ice cream together.

Nor should he. But I feel like they cornered themselves and ran out of content. You could tell that is what happened in the Eternal DLCs. Things just got super tedious and anal and dull. They should have tried to reboot Quake instead.

I thought the same after watching the first gameplay trailer.

There was just too much obnoxious and gimmicky stuff in it, like the constant slow motion effects after every melee hit, which totally kill the flow, the bright purple halos around enemies during stagger, auto lock on during the dragon ride combat, the mechs seem to be also only "walk through a linear hallway while doing melee attacks". And on top of all of this, talk about simplifying the control schemes (you cant dash anymore, weapon switching is super slow😴😴😴) , more focus on cutscenes , ....

Back then it was only a short trailer, which could have been misleading.
This week they started their full marketing campaign and gave a lot of creators access to the game, with the permission to release a lot of footage...... and it looks just as obnoxious and gimmicky as in the trailers:

- The mech and dragon ride sections are super simplistic and gimmicky with zero depth in level design and gameplay.

- The slow mo and purple halos are still a thing. The halos can be turned off in the option menu. But the slow mo cant be disabled. 🤢

The fact is call Doom Dark Ages and not Quake Dark Ages it tell me a lot of safe way to go, the game is Quake but with Doom IP brand name to get easy sells.

True but Quake is still a popular IP that would pay off, just takes a lot more effort to rejuvenate and modernize. All the Quake games were dope from back in the day and remakes/remasters are totally a trend right now. I still feel like they should have put Dark Ages on hold.

TBF Quake was just Doom with a new name and a brown coat of paint.

Yea, Im incredibly underwhelmed. I love almost every Doom game (I dont like Doom 3), and I find Eternal to be the best Doom, best FPS ever made, and honestly in the top 2 best games of all time. But The Dark Ages doesnt look good to me.

It looks slow, lacking in complexity, casual. Doom is all about speed and controlled chaos to me, and this just looks incredibly basic.

Slow movement, no verticality, slow enemy projectiles that move in huge straight wall paths, parrying and blocking focus, custom difficulty sliders thay destroy any and all incentive to learn the game and engage with mechanics... not the follow up I wanted to the perfection that was Eternal.

Still a massive step up from being locked into an animation like the previous two games.

Yes and no, at first was originally a RPG with the hero name Quake that can throw his ax (or maybe a hammer) to their enemies but the team was making IDTech, 0 exp with rpgs and little time.
The problem now with Quake is a very nich game, specially today and after what happen with QC no way they want to use that name.

In early teases of the game is literally said Q6, the nailgun appear in game (now with plasma bullets), the flair is the same concept of the originally idea of Quake of the throwing Ax, the pain sounds of doomguy are the ones from ranger, even the setting of gothic buildings are the same of Quake. The only thing that is missing is the LG (lighting gun) for now...
