Eternal is nothing like this.
Eternal is exactly like this. Game was a turd sandwich with ♥♥♥♥ stew for a side dish. Hope this game is more like 2016, an actual good Doom game. Not some weird "Here have 10 shogun shells and you must kill an enemy with EXACTLY this other attack to get more crap.
58 minutes in the game & you have seen nothing. Skill issue.

Hence, the Dark Ages isn't bad or good compared to the prior two in the remake series of the 2010s. It's just different in that it wanted to take the root back to the original Doom game but with heavier emphasis on melee attacks.
Doom since the original went thru remakes several times before ending up with Doom 2016 and this latest rendition called the Dark Ages is no different.
Worse than both 2016 and Eternal in Combat system.
2016 was a flawless game, yes SSG can be spammed but that's the fun part. The game gives you everything and you can do whatever you want either spam rockets, gauss rifle or your wish. Story was perfect with Sci-Fi and solid environment storytelling. And this one also requires FPS Skill with Aiming precision and movement. Overall solid package. Grit, blood and horror aspect also shines well. It's the best DOOM after John Carmack departure and probably the last one like it.
Eternal had high skill ceiling for an FPS shooter with precision and movement speed focus only playable by FPS fans. Casuals get beaten to pulp due to that at Nightmare. That's it rest of Eternal is bad as you mentioned due to forced Chainsaw spam, low ammo in starting levels, very poor story, absolutely horrible color grading and too much HUD bloat, platforming sections and garbage Hammer for DLC 2 and mega downgrades post release due to Marauder destroyed all noobs and other aspects. Also cheesy cartoony sounds, VFX additions like stars around demons what not, the list is endless. But it attracted masses.
The Dark Ages is 4 steps back - Forced shield / Melee focus. There's no FPS skill anymore now. Consolized controls, the Aim system is not rewarding as you have to Melee. There's Microsoft corporate push on open world design, TGA is Semi Open world, then sliders from Starfield which do not do anything but dilute the difficulty. Main menu and entire menu is a downgrade from both 2 games. There's no OST audible in the gameplay videos of all kinds. Yellow scratches on walls and everywhere handholding mechanics. Constant color bomb of Green glow hinting player to parry with almost all demons, Guns have absolutely ZERO impact you cannot take down any enemy other than fodder. Open world levels are diluted on top with no arenas no chasing AI aggression, bloated in design collectibles and exploration. Cutscene emphasis to max. No more Sci-Fi it's just a stupid fantasy which masquerades as DOOM.
The franchise is dead now. Why fix when it's not broke ? Anyways I digress. It's a big disappointment.
