DOOM: The Woke Ages
Hi fellas, found an interesting article today that talked about the claims the new Doom will be hella of woke and easy. Found it pretty funny to read.
I went so far and translated it for you guys:

Doom: The Dark Ages Called “Woke” Because of Difficulty Sliders – Game Director Responds

These days, it doesn’t take long after a game announcement for “woke” accusations to appear. The same thing happened with Doom: The Dark Ages—though this time, it’s not about gender or race.

Instead, critics are upset that the game allows players to customize difficulty. You can tweak things like speed, damage, and other mechanics using sliders. Some online voices claim this makes the game too easy and undermines the challenge.

“DOOM: The Woke Ages?” – Hugo Martin Responds

Bethesda took this criticism to Game Director Hugo Martin. In a short Twitter video, he addressed the backlash:

“DOOM: The Woke Ages… Yeah, I’ve heard that. I’ve seen the videos. Here’s the thing—first off, I don’t agree with it.”

Martin explained that the sliders aren’t just there to make the game easier. Players can use them to create new challenges as well. Some devs at id Software, for example, slowed projectile speed but cranked up the damage, recreating the feel of classic Doom:

“Classic Doom was a 3D bullet hell, where you weave through slow-moving projectiles that hit really hard,” Martin said. “If that’s the experience you want, you can create it.”

It’s About Replay Value, Not Just Difficulty

Ultimately, the sliders aren’t a replacement for classic difficulty levels—they’re an optional tool to tailor the experience. The traditional modes still exist in Doom: The Dark Ages.

Martin ends with a clear message:

“No, the game isn’t too easy. Stop saying that.”

You’ll be able to judge for yourself when Doom: The Dark Ages launches on May 15, 2025, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

I guess so far we have not seen much positive articles about the game except the ones Microsoft/ID publishes themself.

Thanks for the repost. It’s always a pleasure to read Hugo’s responses, even if we already knew that. I was initially skeptical about the sliders, but Hugo knows what he’s doing.
