DOOM: The Dark Ages

For me, this series is declining.
Full disclosure. I play these as a casual fan, default difficulty etc. I'm not into multiple challenge runs etc.

I really enjoyed 2016.

I despised Eternal and it's stingy ammo economy/expanding on a silly story but I did appreciate the mechanics of it despite it not gelling with me.

Doom DA I played on Gamepass and just finished and although I enjoyed it's slower parry gameplay loop more than Eternal I do think it's inferior despite this.

Not to mention that the story was just so goofy and Saturday morning cartoon that I couldn't get into it.

It was phenomenally well optimised as expected of Idtech games and it ran super smooth with zero crashes for me. Despite that I also feel like this one lacked a visual identity more than it's predecessors with environments largely being boring to look at imo.

For me I'd rank them like this

Doom 2016 - 8/10
Doom Eternal - 7/10
Doom Dark Ages - 6/10

How are others feeling about their personal ranking and how much of a fan do you consider yourself?

Doom 2016 - 8/10
Doom eternal - 9/10
Doom TDA - 7/10

Doom TDA mission continuity is honestly terrible. There are a few missions that give zero explanation of how you even arrived. The developers 100% cut out story bits due to rewrites. There is also a severe lacking of legitimate boss fights.

2016 was nice but was rather short. Good solid story with amazing boss fights.

Eternal was definitely the best campaign. Every mission led to the next with excellent continuity. The DLC made it even better. The boss fights fights were also pretty good.

I like dark ages much much more than Eternal. But agree with OP in one part.
That the series is on a declining path.
Not a good direction at all in generel.

I get it that iD wants to experiment with their creative freedom and make highly out of the box type of games with the Doom title slapped on it. But most Doom fans just want to have a good OLD Doom experience.

Machinegames did a much better job with revitalizing the Wolfenstein franchise in a more Wolfensteinish way than iD is doing right now. (Okay we don't speak about Youngblood. That one was horrible)
It's probably likely they'll give Doom a rest for abit after Dark Ages, I wouldn't be too surprised if Dark Ages gets some more appreciation later, much like Doom 3 eventually did but we'll have to see.

And you receive your first rune after beating half of the game. Just imagine if that was the case in 2 previous games. Theres no pacing, direction or thought put into TDA mission design.
