It's a form of DRM. Strictly speaking, I don't think you always need to be online, just the game needs to go online occasionally to check the user's not stolen the game from somewhere.

This has been happening on games for years now, hasn't it?

So they can harvest your data while claiming they don't.

You can go into offline mode but like Eternal you'll possibly get laggy ♥♥♥♥ as the game tries to connect to the server.
