Let's stop comparing The Dark Ages to Eternal
Most of the criticisms aimed at this game have as their main topic the comparison with its predecessor. In my opinion, we should stop comparing Doom The Dark Ages to Doom Eternal. They are clearly two different things, so why not try to be smart and pretend we are playing something new, instead of a simple copy and paste? We should reward this approach of the developers, instead of banging our fists and continuing to say that it is not what we expected! Because what we as players expect is what makes this industry rotten and stinky. So, since objectively this game has received an Oscar-worthy treatment, let's try to think for a moment that maybe we are the ones who have not understood the intentions of those who created it. Maybe it is not for us, but that is another matter entirely.

yea, dark ages is not meant to be eternal and vice versa

i think they both excel at what they do

If they wanted it they could branded it as a doom spin off.
Damn they could even relase is as the new instalment of Hexen. They already have IP set in middle ages setting.
But instead we got DOOM:TDA, so people will compare it to Eternal, since that's what they released it as.

All 3 games are great and unique
I actually like TDA and can't get into Eternal. I bought it release day and still never finished it because it's soulless and boring, nothing has weight or feeling. TDA has plenty of imperfections but I applaud the effort. I wish they would have called it something else though, it just feels like they are using the DOOM name to get customers since it's a known title. I could do without the mech sequences and the dragon is pretty meh too. Both feel like huge missed opportunities.

It is always fair to compare titles from the same franchise to each other.

But in this case the devs clearly stated that every Doom game they want to release will be very very different from each other.
So after such a statement, it is pointless to compare them. True.
It's unbelievable you can customize EVERYTHING in this game, from the armor and ammos you get, to the speed, to the difficulty, and still people complain about EVERYTHING.

Is it too easy? Is it too long?
Come on guys, I haven't enjoyed such a great experience since the old school doom, Heretic, quake 1 games.
It's so fun I just keep repeating levels to get all collectibles. It's not for everyone, but it's one of the funniest games of the series.

Agree! This one is a blast to play and a mammoth in size and quality. And I say this having loved Eternal and having finished it 4 times.

Yeah but is worse than Doom 2016 so it is bad.
Eternal had new gameplay that is fun once u handle the mechanics.

Compare with Space Marines 2?
Or with Returnal (3rdP)?

If they didn't want the comparisons they should not have totally thrown the tried and true Doom formulas out the window while naming their game Doom, coming off of a highly loved iteration like Eternal.

Of course there are going to be comparisons. Saying people should just hand wave away that this game is a Doom game is silly, and it's a lot easier for me to say "This game isn't as violent or fast paced as Eternal" than to elucidate what that means in a short essay for the sake of not mentioning a game that does it.
Yeah, it's better to compare The Dark Ages to the The Viking Ages.

Wait...

Agreed!

Once you get to level 6 the game is really cooking, fighting huge hordes of monsters. In level 7 the difficulty suddenly spikes, and reminds me of Doom Eternal, but you're even more vulnerable. 2 hits and your dead on NIghtmare.

Why should I stop comparing the best FPS game (at the time of release) with that clownery? What's the reason?
Rename the game atleast.

I mean, it is called Doom: The Dark Ages, which heavily implies it takes place well before any of the other mainline games. It's also been stated countless times that it's a prequel. And then there's the fact that the promo material features Doomguy with a flail and a shield.

So that's why you should stop comparing it to Eternal. It isn't meant to be "more Eternal," or "an improvement on Eternal." It's meant to be a different type of experience: a Doom game set in a very different time period, with very different weaponry and a different approach to many of the gameplay systems.

If you were caught off guard by this, that's on you.
