What is so special about ray tracing?
It looks the same to me. Totally not worth the massive performance hit and RT core existence.

It can enable really cool visuals. Instead of doing that, they made this game blurry AF and ugly as sin and took the performance hit anyway.

Cutscenes look great though. Not sure why they're so much sharper than the normal gameplay.

Game has been really fun so far despite the RT nonsense.
IIRC it's used for some hit detection maybe? otherwise it's raytraced lighting seems to work like UE5's Lumen so it's not as demanding as some of the crazy rtx stuff you see in games like Cyberpunk. It does run on hardware that doesn't support raytracing (like the steamdeck).

It traces rays
Stop trolling. The game probably has the most performative RT of any game and can get 60fps with a 3050 at 1080p.

The devs really should have explained the RT they are using isn't the normal RT people are use to like in Cyberpunk so it isn't anywhere as demanding as one would expect it to be.

That would have really helped.
real answer? for development cost. Ray tracing is how cgi is made in the cgi tools studios use to make games. it then has to be baked in, meaning to test it it takes hours. and that makes games way larger. instead, with a ray tracing exclusive engine, not only is development and testing instantaneous, but developing mods will be way easier. this was the only real way forward.

Nothing special about it, developers like it because they are lazy and don't want to bake lighting anymore. It's just rising sys reqs for them to be lazy at their jobs.

It probably is blurry because it's rendering at a lower resolution and scaling it up. Another cheap trick lazy developers who don't want to do their job use nowadays.
hard disagree. I had to cap my frames to 277 on my 4070ti (mid range) because I was tearing at 280 hz. on high. if you can't play this, your hardware is stuck in the past and we should move forward without you or be stuck there with you. All you need is an rtx card.

Also honest question what the ♥♥♥♥ do you know about computer engineering? Old hardware will eventually lose the ability to play AAA titles. it's always been that way. At least doom eternal uses open technologies like vulkan instead of microsoft or nvidia solutions.

The 4070TI is not mid range to the general public things like 3070s & RX6800s or 7700 XT to RTX 4070 are mid range your in the high end a $800 MSRP card is not mid range at all.

But yes the performance things people keep bring up that the game is crazy demanding are just not true there exaggerating it's not great but ok if a RX6800 a AMD-6000s card which sucks at RT can play at 3440x1440p high/max setting with Balanced upscaling Xess at 70-80fps then most people will be fine playing 60fps at 1080p.

This game runs much better than basically every EU5 game these last few years

The RT in this game sucks, fire is suppose to flicker and reflect without compromise with full on RTX...HW lumen looks fantastic as does Path Tracing
forgot I live in california I guess
also ray tracing isn't enabled yet. it's just engine level. Watch the digitalfoundry video.

Yes, old hardware eventually becomes obsolete. Raytracing is a lazy shortcut nonetheless. And it sucks. Lighting baking has and will always look better, because that's art not a lazy shortcut.
