Sandbox maps and checkpoint system
Why would you go this half open world route of map design, if you cannot implement a proper checkpoint system to accommodate it?

Is it acceptable to have a 1,5-2 minute run back to the next fight while the previous you've just fought had a checkpoint right at the entrance.

This is what honestly throws off any kind of momentum...

I'd go one further: There's no excuse for a Doom game to not allow saving and loading on PC, and there never has been. Not just for dying, but for when we have to stop playing.

One signature aspect of id shooters since the start was the focused, almost narcotic immersion into the gameplay, pushing forward, killing the next monster, finding the next secret, headshotting the next noob, whatever depending on which id shooters, it was that sense of being in the game. And to an extent you can have that with the modern ones, but this running back to where you were from what feels like a couple of minutes ago just wrecks that. Instead of being in the game I am drumming my fingers, maybe looking at the TV while I make my way back to where I left off.

Really you should be able to hit f5/f6 and quicksave imo, because we are not playing on a games console. If they can't give us that, then I agree with you: the very least the game could do is drop us somewhere near where we left off if we exit the game or die. Quick fix is to spam more checkpoints, I guess.

Agree, while quick saves is not a modern game thing I would think the easy way to fix this would be spam more checkpoints. Most encounters were designed to play from start to finish in one attempt, so I can accept that as an excuse and not break them.

Just a few minutes later I managed to find an even more horrendous place to start from... I guess this is a "checkpoint" as well.
After hunting the secret key there was an ambush fight and now I have to fight that every single time before being able to try again the fight I died in... FUN
