If you want a more in your face solid feeling game with more of an emphasis on close fighting dark ages.
I like Dark Ages more as you can probably tell, but it depends on preferences.
Doom Eternal is dash, grapple and gun
Doom the Dark Ages is parry, block, shieldbash and gun
Doom the dark ages deemphasizes both movement an mastery of your arsenal. Some weapons are better for specific things than others but most will get the job done. you will spend a lot of time chaining melee, shield throws, blocking and reflecting attacks, and shield bashes, which while usually on some sort of cooldown, are effectively infinite and easily recoverable in the right order. They also will replenish health, armor and ammo. Thus as long as you're doing those regularly you don't have to think too hard about resource management. The combat does feel meatier. Also while enemies are usually more susceptible to certain kinds of attacks, there's also usually more than one way to exploit those weaknesses. On the movement side, while its still recommended to keep on the move to avoid getting flanked you can also effectively stand your ground to block/parry, and close the distance immediately with a shield bash. In short, combat feels different. It is easier, but also satisfying in its own way.
Finally both games have a lot of secret hunting and platforming, which leads to collectables but also necessary resources for upgrades. Resources in doom the dark ages are a bit more streamlined and easier to keep track of, while doom eternal, it can be a bit overwhelming . doom: the dark ages is more "grounded" in its platforming overall. By contrast the doom eternal platforming sections can be quite ridiculous at times.
Doom eternal also has an in-between missions hub where you can chill, unlock some goodies, view your collectables, listen to some radio, kill some demons in while invincible in a small arena. It's nice.
The sound design in Doom The dark ages is excellent, better than Eternal, HOWEVER that cannot be said for the music.
Doom eternal has a c cosmetics grind that seem to change every week to keep you coming back. It also has asymmetric multiplayer........although who knows if anyone is still playing.
As far as i can tell The dark Ages has neither at this time.
Eternal is absolutely worth playing if you haven't yet, there is no reason to skip it. And I'm saying this as someone who didn't end up enjoying much the direction it was going compared to 2016. It might appeal to you, it's somewhat divisive in the fanbase, so it's impossible to tell how much you will like it without trying for yourself.
It's up to you which one you want to start with, there are no bad choices. I personally would go with release order, but nothing stopping you to go for the newer one if you want.
