(FIX/Guide) The Dark Ages on a 6GB RTX GPU (With RTGI Enabled)
Hi! As you may know, the developers of DOOM: The Dark Ages have said the game requires 8GB of dedicated VRAM to run properly. But if you have a 6GB RTX GPU, don’t worry—you can still play the game just fine.

However, there’s a catch: RTGI (Ray-Traced Global Illumination) might be disabled due to the lower VRAM. This can make the game look very dark in many areas, since the lighting system relies heavily on RTGI.

That’s what happened to me at first. I thought my RTX 3060 6GB (laptop) would handle the game no problem, but something felt off—kind of like Indiana Jones at lunch. Maybe the devs will patch this in future updates, but for now, I managed to enable RTGI by spoofing the VRAM.

Here's how you can do it:
Download the files (link below).

https://mega.nz/file/js4kQaDR#-IlxJTzD_zSvJgFbg1mAg3I9TAlo5hI2vx5G6bZLulQ

Place them in your game directory (the same folder as DoomTheDarkAges.exe).

In-game settings:

Texture pool size : lowest possible

DLSS: Set to Quality(recommended)

Shadows: Low

Volumetric Quality: Low

Geometry Quality: Low

Other settings: Medium or High depending on your GPU, but I recommend Medium

Now you should be able to play the game with RTGI enabled! Just keep in mind that performance may drop slightly.

Heya, did you also encounter some issues with, I guess, reflections or fog (Nearing and during the first section with the Mech) or graphical flickering on 2nd section with the dragon (if you've got there)? Because aside from the game being dark, these are also the issues I'm having with laptop 3060
Hey uh you're a lifesaver. I have a 4050 6GB laptop card and this completely removed my issues with artifacting and too-dark shadows in exchange for only a very small performance drop. Thank you so much

You are an absolute GOD. I've applied it and to my surprise, it basically works flawlessly. Ofc, I expect that the performance will tank soon or whatever, but still. I'm just happy that half of my game doesn't look crushingly black now. Spread the word!

I fixed this issue by running the game through DoomTheDarkAges.exe instead of using the desktop shortcut. Hopefully this works for you

launching through the exe stops the black screen issue from happening but also seems to get in the way of the GPU spoof for some reason so the RTGI stays off
For people facing a black screen issue:

That happens because your laptops dont have a mux switch. Basically your laptop forces the game to start with your secondary gpu hence the black screen. There is an easy workaround to solve this. Just install a screen sharing app like space desk in your mobile phone and your laptop. Share the screen to the phone and then start the game. This makes sure that your dedicated gpu is used to run the game. Once the intro bethesda logo shows up on your mobile screen, just switch it back to laptop. This solves the black screen issue.

Also author of this post should have given me credit. Basically just copied my posted link from another discussion and made it his own.

That worked thank you so much! Also just to note that you need to set the multiple display settings on windows so everything is shown only on the secondary screen before launching the game.
will this work on my 1060?

Nope. This game has forced raytracing, and GTX 1060 doesn't support it.
