Thinking more about this, it could be really cool if it's like a critical strike execution mechanic. You prime the demon with regular weapons (wear it down a little), this exposes weak points for a few seconds, and then you want to use the pistol to land critical hits on the weak points.
For example, instead of a glory kill you would push a button and it would pull the pistol/sidearm - or make it a cool, huge, crude looking revolver/handcannon to fit aesthetically - without switching off your current gun. It fires from range at a staggered demon and blasts parts of their body off, and this creates health drops. Then you have to walk to where the demon was killed to get the health.
Removes the canned animation from the glory kills and forces you to move to a specific spot to get health, which many not always be ideal, so there could be some risk similar to using a glory kill and getting swarmed.
Yep, similar to flame-belch or grenades.
Make it a futuristic 6 shooter, with powerful, quick bullets but not much ammo
Then it starts cramping on existing archetypes like the heavy cannon.
Doom has always been great with weaponization because every weapon is a unique tool that has a specific job and application. If they're going to make a pistol I don't want it to overlap something that already exists and I don't want it to be useless.
Yeah I'd be good with them replacing the heavy cannon tbh with a useful pistol, because they generally serve the same purpose.
However it looks like we're getting the nail gun this time instead of an HC, which is basically the same archetype.
That's basically my point. It becomes obsolete the second you have to take on anything with any amount of health.
Even imps were annoying to kill with the pistol in OG Doom.
If you have ammo for a better weapon the pistol is nothing more than a dedicated fodder popper. It's not going to be reliable against serious threats. I'm all for them making a pistol that remains useful the whole game - it certainly cna be done if it's a higher damage variant.
