They didn't lie, they were unable to get it working & so instead made a horde mode.
I mean, when they announced it they weren't lying, yeah. But it turned into a lie because they never delivered it. For what reason this happened should not concern the consumer.
It seems like they were added because another “hardcore” game, Dark Souls, had them, but Dark Souls is an RPG with a bunch of builds and relatively slow melee combat, plus a lot of potential to be goofy (from what I saw, I never really played Souls). The players roll around a lot trying to backstab each other. It won’t work Ike that in an FPS where Slayer is designed to be a powerhouse and demons are designed to be threatening only in groups.
No, it didn't, they announced that were no longer working on it due to it not working as they intended & instead replaced it with a horde mode which fans wanted even more. if it was a lie they would have said nothing.

"Breaking a promise" if that promise was going to yield something terrible is only a bad thing to a 3 year old.
If anyone wanted to play as a weak-ass demon and a depowered slayer then Battlemode would be more popular. But it sucks - badly.
If they're going to put MP in Doom, make it symmetrical. Not some goofy From-software nonsense.
