Given the comments in the Gamespot interview, that they can now have more enemies/ai on screen than ever before, and that there are almost no limitations anymore, it could very well be v8, or at the very least a heavily improved v7.

Eternal was idTech 7. idTech 666 was an internal "code name" of idTech 6, used by DOOM 2016.

Seems like a missed opportunity to me, honestly. Unreal Engine seriously needs some competition. Nearly every UE4 or UE5 game I've played has serious performance issues even when I far exceed the recommended specs. Meanwhile, I was cranking out 144 fps on Id Tech on hardware that had no business running that smoothly.
True they definitely should license it out. As you say would really help us players. Imagine RDR2 in ID tech lol.
But they are always updating it.. who knows. It could be a new id tech 8, but it doesn't show at all. Looks the same as Eternal.
