There's quite a bit of strategic difference between the two games, actually. Personally I prefer the first game, but a lot of people like the second one. I'm sure some of the people here would be happy to explain the differences better than I, but be wary that the two communities are incredibly polarized and there's only a couple people I would trust to give objective descriptions of differences.

Both are RTS/FPS, one differs for DM, one differs more on strategy. Both are entitled to their own gameplay and unique game design. Battlezone Remastered Aka, the first establised RTS/FPS of it's own rights, takes you on an awesome adventure to the solar system, battling it out against the CCA, and gathering biometal to complete your conquest in getting newer technology as the game progresses, along the way, the campaign gets even darker...

Battlezone Combat Commander: Same genre of game, but everything is completely different from the first game from, Graphics, Strategy, and it completely differs and aspects from the first game...(They're the same game but some changes) I don't know much about the story but from gameplay wise, you have Scavengers that act as Scrap pools, that collect infinite amount of resources, and you have a recycler that deploys a fortress base, and strategy, and as well as Ai act different from the first game, perspectively in this game you can build as much Ai as you want as there is a 100 unit cap, but in all of likely you won't get as much units in the game.

Recap incase i forgot to say some things..

BZ1: Strategy is relied units, taking control of scrap fields, making lots of scavengers...
BZ1: Ai tends to have trouble with path-finding and trying to find its destination sometimes, but can be worked around with proper control of the ai(The Player)
BZ1: Maps are friendly, and there's tons of variety of maps and mods in the workshop
BZ1: Offensive units are friendly, their aiming is amazing and they will attack almost anything that is in range of their likings.

BZ2: Strategy is relied on the same purpose as it is above but it's a little different, strategy is based on how many scrap pools you control, and how good your Ai/and Dming is.
BZ2: Tons of maps/mods in the Workshop
BZ2: AI are a little troublesome, if you put them somewhere without commanding them they work a lot effectively.(Only Offesnive units to my knowledge, Scavengers are well understood as well as constructors)

I don't know much anymore than i do with BZ2, but more comments will explain it better than i do, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks. In that case I'll stay away from BZ2.

BZ98 multiplayer isn’t dead at all. I can have many games per day without even scheduling them from my steam friendlist or discord.

I only played Battlezone 2 back in the day and I'm liking the differences in 98 very much.

The scrap mechanic reminds me of the game Sacrifice, it's a very cool twist.

I love both of these games now. It's amazing how advanced and far ahead they were for their time, and very sad how nobody managed to keep their legacy alive.

The only bad thing is the lack of a skirmish mode with bots, or even co-op multiplayer. The AI is there in the campaign, so why the oversight, I wonder... I remember playing Battlezone 2 in co-op against modded ultra-hard AI, it was a blast.

I would recommend both if it is at all an option. The primary difference between the two is scale; in BZ98R resources are finite, which places greater emphasis on ensuring your attack is decisive (so as to avoid giving your enemy a stick with which to beat you). BZCC is much more like a typical RTS where resources can be mined indefinitely. The scrap recovery BZ98R is built around is still significant, but less so - attacking an enemy with all you've got and losing will still set you back and will still give them a bonus, but it no longer puts all of the resources on their side of the map.

BZCC has a more active modding community and is the more active of the two in multiplayer, so if you want to explore more possibilities or aren't so fussed about what you play online, go with that. Ultimately though, both games appeal more to different types of people; BZCC will give you more units and infinite resources, and allows you to rely more on your RTS experience; in BZR the emphasis is much more on the player - BZCC's strategy multiplayer mode is won by destroying the enemy base, BZR's by killing the enemy player.

BZ98 is a generally much better game than CC, especially if you pick up the DLC.
