Krita has a nice feel to it, easy to use and kinda powerful. It's free on the website and available on Steam for ... 39$ i think? I might be wrong, but it is costly.
Mischief works on INFINTE zoom level, so you can zoom in how much you want (there is a limit, but a very big one, something like 36x million zoom level or something.) It's lightweight and also very easy to use. I found the free version OK, though a premium version is obviously better, however... 25$.
Gimp is a free alternative to Photoshop. It's just as powerful as Photoshop and is very popular. Some find it better than photoshop. I didn't like it, but my friend uses it all the time. Free
Net.Paint... never used it, but heard about it. Free
CorelPaint is made by corel. People say it's awesome and you can paint like in real life. Never used it myself tho. Not free.
ArtRage. Kinda the same deal as corelpaint. Not free... probably.
OpenCanvas 6 in my opinion is better than SAI + it's still supported. I find it a little more powerful and more lightweight. + now it has a reference window, so you can load an image for reference without the need to open it in a photo viewer or another window. Not free.
Blackink is a VERY powerful tool. If you know how to use it right. You can quickly create an amazing brush. It also reacts to how fast you mouse moves and makes a different stroke. Not many programs support this. Not free.
If you want an in-depth comparison between them, I might try, but don't expect anything special.
This is just a qucik list of programs other than SAI.
Recently a new function in opencanvas has been created: the reference window.
Just like in SAI, you can rotate the canvas, edit the brush, have a color wheel etc.
What it does include that SAI doesn't, are the rulers and perspective. With ruler it's simple, you can select various lines and snap to their angle. Horizontal, vertical, both, or at an angle.
The perspective is just what the name implies, perspective. The program shows lines to the perspective you chose to help you draw, like one-point, two-point and three-point perspective. It helps greatly if you are creating a cover, pinup, background, etc.
Just like SAI you have smoothness for your tools. Also, you can fully customize your workspace and by using regedit even change the colors of the windows to have them any color you want. I think the only downside is the Windows 98 look on the whole thing. Since I've switched to OC, I never used SAI again. It doesn't mean OC is perfect, I just prefer it more than the SAI.
Hope this clears things up :)
EDIT:
I forgot to mention one CRUCIAL function in OC that is not present anywhere else: you are able to create and download .oce files, which are the OpenCanvas Events files. They allow you to see how somehting was done from step one to the finished product. You can pause at any time, skip, play and even pause it at any moment and paint it. Want to use the same brush as someone else? why not, just pause, save the brush the artist was using and there you go. This is actually and amazing feature and that's what hooked me. I use it all the time, so I can come back to see how I've done things if I forgot something. The only problem is that it is only compatible with .oce files. You can't just open up a sai or a .png or a .jpg and see how it was done.

You might also wanna try it with this pack. OC's defaults are a bit... well, "meh" would be an adequate term.

With this one my tablet pen lags a bit (I have a Wacom bamboo). And also struggles to do small details. It is just not as smooth.
Could it be my tablet? I have had the same problem with GIMP, Krita and even the drawing thing on DevianArt. But works perfectly fine with SAI.
I may get a refund if it is possible.
And if you want less lag, you may try to reduce the Stabilizing Level in the Brush Settings (Under the Stroke Option menu).
Do you happen to have a 32bit (or x86) OS, hence using the 32bit version of OC? If that's the case, then yes, there is some lag on the brushes. Brushes run flawlessly on the 64bit version.
If that's your issue, then yes, you might be better off using SAI, if brush responsiveness affects you that much.
In windows files I see a folder for x86 though. And in the install folder of OC6, I see two files libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll.
Does that mean I have the 32 bit version installed?
