My backlog is cooked
I'm barely in day... 5 I think?
Just did the outside-the-wall boardgame thingy for the first time.
The localization has been discussed to death so I'll skip that chestnut and instead say the game play (battles) are extremely fun. When directly comparing this game to the similar 13 Sentinels (in terms of being a VN with tower D battles and similar themes), I much prefer this game's combat. Tetris+Tower Defense+Grid Based Tactics is an interesting mash-up, and the idea to reward you for killing your units is brilliant and makes you balance cost/reward on the fly.
I don't know if I like the story as much as 13 Sentinels yet, but it's actually somewhat interesting this early in and sets up a good mystery that I am 100% sure will not have satisfying explanations because lol Uchikoshi.
I'm on day 25, it has pretty much everything you could expect from a mix between danganronpa and zero escape. 100 days seemed like a lot but the game progresses at a decent pace and often introduces either new gameplay elements or new scenario stuff, it certainly doesn't feel like repeating the same day over and over so far.
It's definitely visual novel first and foremost, and people who expect plenty of control when it comes to schedule might get frustrated. You have days where you can decide how to progress, but the biggest chunk of the early game is railroaded by scenario.
The combat system is much better than I gave it credit for initially too, there aren't much RPG elements to it but it is pretty damn tactical and you have to think about every move properly.
Scenario is alright, if it's anything like zero escape it's gonna get crazy in the second half and/or in alternative endings, a lot of the early game introduces the universe and the gazillion inconsistencies the inevitable plot twists will appear from.
Characters are... not the best. Bonus point for the blue-haired emo chick who was shaping up to be one of the worst and ends up quite funny, but I guess it's mostly because her english VA is perfect for the role, while MC's VA straight-up sounds like some Deku meme
zero escape games clearly had the best sets of secondary characters, and The somnium files had the worst in my opinion, hundred line sits between the two so far. A lot of cheesy over-the-top stuff, and what's not over the top is kind of recycled, but I guess that's the danganronpa side of things.
Uchikoshi is just better with western settings, ironically enough, it always feels like he's UWU-ing his writing whenever trying to reach the japanese audience
Not a fan of the story events that happen between day 11 and 19, felt like a whole load of nothing, I hope the game picks up the slack soon.
The battles are great and you have a lot of options, gameplay-wise the team is very varied in their roles.
I HATED the recruitment "mini-game", reminded me of the worst DR mini-games like surfing and the taxi, felt completely pointless and also low quality.
Most of the characters are just alright, they're a bit too simple for my taste but they're pretty funny.
The story is progressing slowly and there's lot of unexplained things, I assume the first playthrough may be like the setup for other routes, because there's many events that made me think "surely there's another way to deal with this."
Got a repeated event after interacting two times with the same character during free time, that felt very lazy. I wish we had access to the bond system earlier, because it's still not available for me and its absence is just making it harder to feel anything for the characters when they're already looping.
TL;DR: 20 days in and I'm very lukewarm about the game other than the combat scenarios which have been great.
Yeah I had to switch the VAs other to JPN VA myself, something about it for me hits a bit better where I enjoy them more. Definitely let me know when you reach more closer to the first ending done cause thats me too. Lots of stuff im questioning like why, what, how, and explain
Totally understandable. Didn't care much got the recruit mini game but hey least its only a few times not a lot. Yeah I dont have the bond system still hopefully we will see it soon. My favorite part is def the battles I love that I can plan a kill all in one turn at times. Especially the builds and how I use them. Most use is definitely Eito. The glass canon unit for me that does around 6 damage? So good
Been playing it as much as possible and enjoying myself. In my view, the game progresses very slowly in comparison to DR games yes, but it is steadly and consistently giving you something to occupy your mind, be it new gameplay variation or pieces of the story.
In my honest opinion, the 34/42 days is the only point where the game and characters made me annoyed in some parts.
Still, my experience is one of a playing a very nice JRPG with DR elements, and very curious as where the story and the plot is leading to, many theories have been presented in the story, and curiosity is running at a all time high.
The recruitment minigame was so obscenely bad, I'm convinced it was intentionally so, and will be related to a plot twist later, because my gosh what the heck even was that.
Combat is quite good in my opinion. A lot of red herrings and possibilities still in the air about the plot.
Gameplay is a lot of fun even tho this isn't my kind of game. And yeah, the recruitment minigame is worse than any of the bad minigames from the DR series. I'll try my best to keep an open mind, like maybe all this will feel justified by the end and I'll love the game. But it's tough lmao
Boy I got to that part of the game and I agree. Some characters (you know who I mean) are insufferable, everyone else is a doormat, and the MC is a super extra absorbent doormat. I'm not one to complain about anime tropes in my anime games, but I'm not finding these guys endearing or entertaining like the Dang It Ron Paul crews. I enjoy the gameplay but I'm having trouble not just jumping ship to Oblivion or Expedition 33. Maybe I should do so and come back later.
I had written a very long post but I gave up after I realized it read like a doompost.
Currently at day 32/33, 10 hours in and very disappointed in the main storytelling.
I've never been too fond of japanese writing, but this game has the Zero Escape series writer behind it and he's quite prolific, but it feels like they've taken a secondary role in this, because pretty much all I see in the story so far is DR.
I'm still willing to push through to the good part. As soon as I see choices I know my impression of the game will improve and I'll be able to 100% it regardless of the quality.
This first route should have never been a thing in my opinion, when the main hook for the game was the many routes and choices and branches, kinetic visual novels have to be extremely good for me to be interested and this is simply nowhere near that level.
So far the game is DR without murder mysteries, without an inkling of Zero Escape to be seen.
I really, really hope I can come back to this post to write about how good the game gets later but we'll see.
