English "Localization" issues
I enjoyed the Demo overall, but I couldn't help but notice that Lolcowlizers have seemingly been involved with translating this game, why do they keep hiring them?

The Japanese voice line for this one was just "Hai":
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3442528952

She was yelling about him being dead here:

For many others, they didn't have voice lines, but I somehow heavily doubt the English translation is even close to what's being said in the Japanese version:

There were a lot more Cringe ones especially for Darumi throughout, I didn't Screencap them all. Also still plenty of simple typos left.

This kind of stuff downgrades an interesting game from "get it early" to at least "wait for a Deep Sale", or if it's bad enough even "Ignore", just like I wouldn't buy a book I'm interested in if I find out that parts of it have been purposefully mistranslated.

Well that's 60 euros saved.

I guess they must have chosen cheap localization since it was getting tight on the budget.
I'm going to try to "rewrite" the dialogue in my head using the Japanese dub to better understand how the characters really are but I love this kind of game so much so I'll do it anyway.
Someone on BasedMods or something is probably going to do a re-translation mod if it's possible.

Gonna play this in Japanese and enjoy it without all the drama.

Btw if you're gonna do these kind of comparisons you should speak Japanese first and understand what the vibe of each character in the original is first. I'm not gonna comment on the quality of these translations or how I would have translated it, but it is important to understand that if there's a character that would be prone to speak in cringe internet slang that's Darumi. Now, she doesn't do this all the time in the original, so I think it's not appropriate to abuse that kind of pattern of speech.

There is a great deal of change in the Yakushiji line tho, in the original he says that Hiruko should change her sex (via operation) so that he can hit her, which I can see how English localizers decided to change, as it is a very political theme over there. This way of translating is objectively wrong as it makes the sentence out of character for Yakushiji but it is a way of "softening" that some editors will use sometimes because they don't want to publish offensive content. Which is not good because at that point the flavour of the original is lost (This is. This is why using internet slang on all characters is just a symptom of poor translating skills. In Japanese, Yakushiji sounds more like "Get a ***** sex change so I can beat the **** out of you." Because of the rough speech patterns he uses in JP I add these strong words that suit how he speaks better. I've also see people translate this line making it extremely vulgar which I think is a miss too. Btw English is not my first language so my translations are not that good.

If you guys want to have a more informed opinion I can do an analysis of some sentences and their translation.

And yeah as a lot of people already pointed out, in danganronpa a lot of times characters say 1 word and the text box is full of text so that's not reliable either, you should see what the original jp box text says and then compare.

This motivated me to replay the demo again and compare the translations. I'll see what I can find and I'll try to make a fair analysis.

Been learning 2 and half years, definitely good enough to enjoy the demo but people really shouldn't have to do this just to avoid censorship, that's where we are as JRPG and VN fans though either learn a time consuming language or suffer with a sanitized product.

The "offensiveness" stuff is absolutely the worst part standards are NOT universal yet we have a handful of people applying their own subjective standards while chopping and changing somebodies else work on behalf of every other customer, its just so tiresome at this point.

I'm comparing a lot of the lines in the original with the translated version and taking screenshots, maybe I'll post it later.
Someone on the Hundred Line subreddit had revealed some of the localization changes from the demo: https://old.reddit.com/r/LastDefenseAcademy/comments/1j0iu4j/honest_opinion_of_the_eng_version/mfdpgc0/

Sadly, it looks like this game will be as badly localized as the Danganronpa games.

I'm about 40 minutes into the game comparing original to TL and althought the translation is mostly fine there are a lot of times where things get changed with no aparent rhyme or reason behind it.

I'm recopilating a lot of info and will post it and comment on it so that people can evaluate the translations for themselves.

This is the translator's job, and if it comes off as terrible then the writing is terrible and people will dislike whether or not it's the translation or source material's fault. However, it also makes sense to squint at the last person who touched the pie when asking who facked it.

Especially since we've seen multiple cases of it being translators, some of which who proudly proclaimed that facked the pie loudly on social media. But you don't really have an argument here. If it's not a bad translation then it's just bad writing and nothing of value changes about it to the end user, it's still bad.

I'll wait for reviews, meh. I don't think this game is it. Sucks it might sink the studio but they brought it on themselves.

The Danganronpa localizions where good and funny! What was wrong with them?

The localisation of DR1 at least was notably bad and demonstrably full of mistranslations, never mind liberties taken: https://danganronpatlcritique.wordpress.com/2018/11/17/danganronpa-translation-critique-prologue/

Same with V3 as well: https://oumakokichi.tumblr.com/post/633898761338388480/what-are-the-differences-between-the-original-and

Honestly, Kodaka's games have a bad track record of having below average localizations.
what is “crack yer egg”? never heard that before
