My personal favorite is The Eternal Duelist Soul, it’s very straight forward, has well-paced duels, and pretty much follows the rules. I also enjoyed The Sacred Cards which was a little jankier, but I like that it has a story and it kind of feels like if Yu-Gi-Oh was a JRPG. To be fair though I haven’t played all of the games in the collection, only four so far.

I love Eternal Duelist Soul also, but if you use the 8 digit codes, the game becomes very easy immediately. Just invest like 30 minutes inputting the best cards' codes and you basically can't lose.

Tbh, that's true for every game prior to WC2006.
The first YGO game I ever played was 'Worldwide Edition', THE BEST starting game to learn the rules...the only thing missing is the PERFECTED ability to sort the Trunk & Deck into smaller groups of cards...so there is still some scrolling needed as the card collection gets bigger. Although the Later/Newer games are superior because all of the card's effects get updated to work properly.
If you think about card collecting games, they are all awesome, but if you think about being cool and next gen, then these games are very ,,, Classic

As a video game, I love the simplified rulesets for the games like Sacred Cards, Dark Duel Stories, and Forbidden Memories. Yes as a TCG those rules are not great. That's why they call it "the early days". But things like being able to fuse monsters on the fly without needing a special fusion card, building custom cards in DDS, and not worrying about a ton of schizophrenic spell/trap chains that overly complicates the game. It's great. You can grind for ages and slowly build in power. Makes it more like an RPG than a proper TCG.

The Sacred Cards and Reshef of Destruction are directly connected games that are 2 sides of a coin. Sacred Cards is way too short and easy, whereas Reshef is way longer, slower, and more difficult. I wish there was a game that was more of a middle-ground. But for these "early days" games, I think they easily have the best bones.
i played through dm1, got to dm2, also had dm7 (sacred cards) game going & dipped into destiny board traveler at the same time. I'd say it's totally worth it to just try the ones that look interesting... While dm1 might not be mechanically deep yet the gacha element of trying to get the perfect card drops to construct your deck makes it more fun. dm2 you might get powerful cards early on but can't use them til later whereas dm1 is total free for all, if you find the headhunt 1600 atk card in stage 1 you have it immediately for use.

These are part of the DM series, the mechanics build up all the way into dm7 (sacred cards)/dm8 (reshef). Dm2 introduces a lot of the mechanics that'll go on to be used later, dm3 has a really unique mechanic that doesn't return in dm7/dm8 too.
