This game sure is awesome.
Like many games, it did have it's shortcomings. There's only 124 dice in the game (114 monsters, 10 items), with an extra 77 monsters in the code that went unfinished. And a sizeable chunk of these dice are weak beyond the early game where you have to make do with whatever the game gives you. The AI was also quite dumb and often "forgot" to trigger their monsters effects.
On the other hand, there were several ways to build a winning pool of dice, and at least one group in the past was able to create a solid metagame with house rules. This meta is documented on the DDM game board of GameFAQ's, and it orbits around dragon pools that use Lord of D to gain invincibility and create a fortress, but there were enough outs for other strategies to survive and thrive.
I'm looking forward to seeing DDM get a second chance. Maybe this can generate enough interest for a mod or a re-release that adds the dummied out monsters back in, and/or retrains weaker dice to have effects that make them viable.
God it would be while if this collection causes DDM to become popular enough for Konami to care about it again
Also, I've read there are several unused monsters in the data. Any chance of undummying them, even if it's as DLC?
At launch, no, it will just be Duel Monsters 4, but they did mention that “select titles will be updated to support online play after release”. I can see certain titles unfortunately being excluded, but I would love for all of them to have online play.
It's a shame that none of this will ever get addressed.
