Game does not run on my win10 pc
I've seen posts where people say the game should run fine on win10. and yet, when i attempt to run the game from steam, it shows it's running for a few seconds and then nothing happens anyway. anyone with this problem?

I have the same problem on win7 too... I see cpu usage spike but nothing else happens (no logo / loadingscreen / nothing). After a few minutes I open task manager and close it. (Why is it launching through rundll32 btw??)

(nothing else is wrong with my system and my other 1k games run fine)

I've got the original disc version. Running it with a Starforce free exe I get issues with the game only rarely booting. Putting Compatibility Mode of running the game as adminstrator onto the exe helps, but it's still rare it starts up!

Got the solution on Win7 system: go to the game path, open properties of xpandrally.exe and enable 'run as administrator'. Now start normally via Steam. Cheers

ropeburn - I'm sorry, that didn't quite work for me, at least under Win10. if it works in Win7 - cool. might try with another pc

Do you use window defender?? If so you need to add a App & program exemption with overrides for DEP and Force randomization of images., check square box and turn on to off. Problem solved on mine, must be a windows defender update that caused this. It took me a few hours to figure out which options were causing this, I sure hope I solved issue

That game starts no more on steam after i bought a new graphics card ( RX 590 ) :(((
It just says "cannot initialize renderer"
And a downloaded web copy just does nothing wen i try to start.
I don't use Windows defender anyway, and I've tried all emulation options.
Can I somehow get the game refunded? I actually bought it from steam to get it runnin WITHOUT problems...
But I played it for 5 hours, because before I bought the graphics card, it worked perfectly, the driver is up to date.

Look to this thread and use the file "ChromeEngine2.dll" from this patch, but without changing the executable itself.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/3010/discussions/0/1640926712945717299/

After this the following steps must be done, or you still get an error message:

1. Copy the "ChromeEngine2.dll" into the main game directory.

2. Open the file "VideoSettings.scr" in the "Data"-folder with

a text-editor and change the values "Resolution(X,X)" so that

it matches your used screen resolution (even wideview works).

3. Edit the value MaxRefresh(X) in the same file to a number that

matches your used screen refresh rate.

4. Save the file

Now run the game from your Steam Library

After changing the video options in game (the changed resolution from the text-editing isn't shown here - the field is empty) you have to exit the game again and set the resolution in the "VideoSettings.scr" once again.

But only the resolution, cause the rest stays, like you set it up in the ingame options. Strangely, after changing the ingame options, the game resets the resolution back to 800x600, so you have to do this manually again.

One other hint. Xpand Rally makes use of Java runtimes. I installed all Java runtimes on my machine from JRE 4 up to 20, totally ignoring those security warnings that it isn't good to have older versions of Java still installed.

It's only a HTPC for movie viewing and some gaming fun on the couch ;-) Maybe that's also another reason I was able to get it running again.

With nearly the same methode as mentioned above, I was also able to get Xpand Rally Extreme and GTI Racing running (all titles are from Techland). Only difference was to start Xpand Rally Extreme in save mode for the first time.

Although all titles are quite old, they still don't look bad, especially if you set all options in the graphics card driver to the maximum possible and thus skip the in game settings, and things are possible that the game didn't support back then.

I had a similar issue, this is what worked for me:

1) download old java runtime (I used jre 1.4.2_18 https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/java-archive-javase-v14-downloads.html ,
to download from official archive account is needed)
2) install it
3) go to C:\program files (x86)\java
4) copy installed version (in my case j2re1.4.2_18)
5) go to game installation folder
6) delete jre folder
7) paste copied folder
8) rename it to "jre"

I wish it would help someone in the future :)
