Pick any race, custom class.
Start with Body 4 or 5, Ranged Weapons 5.
Skill towards either Rifles 3 or Shotgun 7. Eventually get the two best Shotguns or the single best Assault Rifle. Rifles 3 is the best one early and good until the end. Full Auto ftw. Shotguns are good throughout, best in the end yet cost more Karma.
Get Body 6.
Get Ranged Combat 8 (or 7 and a Camo Full Suit if you lack Karma).
Ranged Combat is to hit stuff, Weapon Skills to make hits count, Body to survive. Check what you need to determine what to level up next.

Get a bioware leg for Quickness + either a 2nd of those (always good) or a movespeed cyberleg (better if used well).
Either get the targeter Eyes or Vision Magnification II. I'd pick the former, both are fine.
You can get a very good zero Essence fill for your Body Slot in late game so you could wait for that. Or you take one of several good options earlier.
Arms are for melee mostly, Headware either for decking/rigging or poison spit. The poison is nice yet these slots are least important as far as ranged fighters go.
In any case you need to do the Sewers mission asap and check your mail after missions for the doctors call if you want the good stuff.
*Errata: you need a Datajack ofc to use Smartlink weapons. Either hand or head.

Body 6, Quickness 8 -> Ranged Combat 8 -> Shotgun 7 costs 119 Karma. Invest the other ~80 Karma as you see fit. With Rifles it is 22 cheaper, makes 97 Karma total.
Charisma to play face, Decking, even a basic melee build or a burned out mage: you've got enough Karma left to do whatever you fancy.

Get a Taser. Buy Jazz & Cram whenever possible. Eiger can use an Assault Rifle, too. Don't be afraid to move around in fights. Geek the mage first. Lucky Strike is pretty good if you need a fighter actually. Spread up or eat grenades.

If you want to play through for a second or third time: my Solo guide is out there if you look for a challenge.
At this point it will be much more fun to be playful and do your thing, without guides.
This is all you need.

I'll give a little more detail so you can choose for yourself: Ranged combat 8 is a must at end game to get the best gear

Rifle builds have the highest single enemy damage, can do groups carrying a second weapon as the rifle skill also controls grenade launchers - read the skill descriptions to see if you want to spend the Karma to get the special abilities, I suggest at least 3 to get full auto, get strength 7 by end game to get the minigun

Shotgun builds have higher close range damage and can damage adjacent enemies out past range 5, you can get a shotgun with burst fire, skills I would suggest Shotgun 7 as well but see if you'll use the special abilities before you spend the karma

Submachine Gun has low damage overall but can hit multiple targets, SMG skill level 5 gets you the flush from cover ability which is very useful, I usually get this one on rifle builds if I have the karma just for that ability

Pistol is kind of a specialty skill, specialise and shoot for Pistol 8 which gets you the Disarm skill which is incredibly overpowered since it can render enemies completely powerless to attack you

Body 5 or 6 is minimum
