Is there any way to grind XP?
I played through this game once a really long time ago and I don't remember if this can be done. Is the player limited to the very on-rails main plot and occaisional side quest, or is there anywhere someone can grind out some levels to make the main quest easier?

Basically, no, you can't grind. There's no provision for it

dude, be happy that theres no grinding involved. the game was designed that you can beat it by getting exp from main and sidequest. maybe lookup guides on steam for character creation and certain etiquette choices. always get 3 etiquette sooner than later and prioritize corp, security. and dont go hybrid, you wont have the resources for that.

I'd rather be able to play any character I like and overcome technical weakness by leveling up a bit extra somewhere. Although maybe I can take them through a workshop sidequest to level up and then import to the main game. Is that possible to start the main vanilla game with characters imported from a workshop user-made quest?

You can't import characters

You can. Do side quests.

Dragonfall is nowhere NEAR hard enough to have to do this. It gives you 3 and a half very strong companions for free, more money then you could POSSIBLY spend and is quite generous with alternate ways to complete missions.
