- Check that your drivers are up to date;
- If your desktop's native resolution is higher than 1920x1080, try running the game in a window;
- Try forcing DirectX 9 with the -force-d3d9 command line parameter.
I got i7 2600 and a gtx 1060.
Double checked also all my drivers, not just display drivers (I have commercial software that scans and updates all drivers you could think of), Vsync on/off, also tried Vsyncs from Nvidia panel, installed on SSD instead of HDD... still getting drops to 40. Depends on level completely.
Such a shame. Great game but.. the infamous but. This seems to be something only few people get. And as such, probably something that never gets fixed.
Now, I am using the v387.78 driver which installs via Windows Update for Insiders on the Slow ring as I was and this uses WDDM 2.3 rather than WDDM 2.2 so the issues *may* be related to that and/or the new build of Windows. Whatever, this issue affects a number of games but only Unity Engine ones so far and then it doesn't affect all of the, Ori and the Blind Forest and The Last Tinker: City of Colors run fine but Orwell, Kerbal Space Program, Immortal Redneck and this game all drop or lock to 30 fps.
I found that Alt-Tabbing out of the game and back fixed the performance for the duration of the race, suggesting the issue was caused by Unity's default borderless window mode (which is misleadingly refers to as Fullscreen). However, the next race would go back to 30 fps unless I again Alt-Tabbed out and back into the game.
The permanent fix that works for me is to force *proper* exclusive fullscreen mode via the game's launcher options (right-click on the game in the Steam library > Properties > Set Launch Options). Just add -window-mode exclusive and click OK to save. The game now runs perfectly at anywhere between 75 and 115 fps on maxed out Fantastic settings with Shadows set to max too at 2560x1440. I do have a 165 Hz G-SYNC monitor though. This has totally transformed the game for me as the framerate drops were just too distracting before.
This may not be the issue others are having with performance on their PCs - certainly if you are still using Windows 10 v1703 or earlier and/or the official v385.69 driver (which only supports WDDM 2.2) - but if you are having similar issues to me then it can't hurt to try forcing exclusive fullscreen.
