Unable to play
So I bought Road Redemption the beta a few years ago. I enjoyed the game, although mine was bugged and I was unable to continue past level 7 or 8 due to game crashes.

I see that the full game is now out. On my game library, I see an option to install, but it won't highlight, or allow me to do anything. Do I need to purchase the whole game, or there yet another bug involved? Any help would be appreciated.

Try this: right-click ROAD REDEMPTION in your library and select Properties > Betas. Make sure the "Select the betas . . ." field is set to None.

If you were in a beta that's no longer active, doing this may cause the game to disappear from your library (might take a relog), meaning you never owned the full version. If it still shows up when Betas is set to none, then you should be able to install by the normal method.

The good news is, it's matured into a great single-player or couch co-op game, well worth the price. Post back here if you need help troubleshooting.

Thank you for the response. I just checked, and the Select the betas is set to none. The issue is still there.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but I have some achievements, screenshots, etc from the beta. I don't know how to remove any saved info from Steam or my PC.

That shouldn't be an issue. Does Steam think the game is installed? If you right-click on the game in your Library, the top command will be "PLAY" if Steam thinks it's installed, and "INSTALL" if not. Do you see the PLAY command? What does it do?

A few other things to look for:

- The game's settings and saves are stored in a folder called C:\Users\<name>\Documents\Road Redemption\Saves, in files named 0.settings and 0_0.save. Does this path exist, and are these files there?

- The game is typically installed in a folder called <steamlib>\steamapps\common\RoadRedemption (<steamlib> is usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam, but can be different if your Steam library is split over multiple drives). Does this folder exist? Does it contain anything?

- If the game has ever been installed, there should be a file named <steamlib>\steamapps\appmanifest_300380.acf. This is just a text file; you can open it in Notepad and see the installation parameters for ROAD REDEMPTION. Does this file exist, and does it contain anything?

If the problem is that Steam thinks the game is installed, and it isn't, you can manually uninstall by cleaning up all three things:

1. Shut down the Steam client with the Steam/Exit menu command;

2. Backup and remove the Documents\Road Redemption folder (by "backup" I mean make a copy somewhere outside the Documents tree, like C:\Temp);

3. Backup and remove the RoadRedemption folder (and all subfolders) from steamapps\common;

4. Backup and remove appmanifest_300380.acf from steamapps;

5. Restart Steam.

The game should now appear in your Library in an uninstalled state, allowing you to do a full reinstall. Saves, achievements etc. may be available if they were saved in the cloud, but not if they were only saved locally. If you can get the game reinstalled properly, you can try restoring the 0.settings and 0_0.save files from your backup.

Good luck, and be careful! Let me know if you have any questions before you modify Steam files outside of Steam itself.

Ok. So, on the store page, it says the game exists in my library. That means I probably won't have to buy it.

When I try to go in to the files, Road Redemption folders do not exist. This is a different hard drive than the one I had when I last played the game. I think my friend had backed up everything when he replaced it. I do have an external hard drive.

My friend who built my PC will be here on Saturday. I will refer to this and have him take a look for the folders. Hopefully, this will get fixed, and I'll be able to play again.

Thanks for the help. I'll keep you posted.

Sounds good. I'll be around on Saturday if you or your friend need any help troubleshooting. But based on the hard drive change, it sounds like Steam has just gotten confused about whether and where the game is installed. A manual repair should be possible, but If it comes down to it, uninstalling and reinstalling Steam itself (and any other games you currently have installed) should fix it as well.

Good luck!

Haha, figured out the problem. The full game requires a 64 bit system, and mine is 32 bit. I will be upgrading in the next month or so, and should be good to go then.

Thanks for all your help, Natty.

Aah that's right, I'd forgotten that they dropped 32-bit support toward the end of Early Access. Good on you for figuring it out! Hope you enjoy when you finally get to play.
