We were losing,so I said "Lets pull a France and Surrender". The next guy said that we should pull an Italy and switch sides.Then another guy said "No,Lets pull a Russia and suck for most of the War but make an epic comeback". We only had one base left and within 2 minutes we had all of them.What a comeback.

8.3/10 it keeps historical jokes alive.

I originally got this game November 2005. I was 18 at the time - trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life post High School. Looking back, this really was a golden time in my youth, and it sounds really silly, but DoD was a big part of that. I was still living with my parents - along with my older brother and my best friend. We would spend the day working together painting houses, and then come home and hop on DoD. My older brother, friend, and myself had a group of additional friends that used to hop on and play with us as well. Something about crisp fall/winter air, changing leaves, a sense of timelessness or at least "nothing but years ahead of you," coupled with the experiences I had with this game were really magical. When the game came out the graphics and game physics were amazing (as was to be expected from the Source engine at the time). The player community, not counting my friends and family that played, wasn't toxic yet, and the servers were popping with tons of enthusiastic people to play with. The cinematic feel of the combat, the teamwork element, the epic sniper battles, the bullet storms, the last stands, the close quarter shovel fights, running through smoke into MG bukkake no man's land with nothing but a hope and a prayer, and of course the silly spray tags all added to the overall amazing feel of this game. I played very heavily for a couple years (the 47 hours listen on Steam has to be short by like 100 hours), and then life happened as it tends to do, and people drift apart. I have gone back and played intermittently over the years, and it still looks *decent* considering it's age, but nostalgia always hits me like a wave when I log in and hear that damned music. Does it objectively hold up today? - no not really, but it has my heart lol.... Anyways, thank you DoD for some of the best memories of my young adult life - kind of sad/lame to say that about a video game, but I think this is quite common for my generation. Anyone out there who got wrecked/rode the lightning via a brash Rocketeer named Rabid Woodchuck from approx '05 to '08, I miss you too xoxo.

P.s. I know the whole "what happened to Source/Valve?" convo is long and over-discussed, especially when it comes to THE GAME SERIES THAT SHALL NOT BE SPOKEN OF #crowbarsandheadcrabs, but if they ever came out with a DoD2: Source I would ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ die from orgasm/stroke/nostalgia/feels.

P.s.s. November always feels like DoD season to me. Also thank you for reading my rambling sappy review.

So my dad played this before is was born and listen i was born in 2009 and i don't know when this game was released but this game is the only thing i have to remember him by so i played it and ngl its good so yeah thanks Valve for keeping this game up and helping me remember my dad

Does people still read reviews for this game?

I tried Day of Defeat: Source again recently and was expecting it to be dead. After all, the game is almost a decade old now. However, I was still able to find several populated servers at all hours of the day or night. Old age hasn’t killed DOD:S.

If anything age has worked in DOD:S’s favor. For example, it attracts an older and more mature crowd. I haven’t had to put up with as much drama or slurs from annoying prepubescent teammates as I do in more modern multiplayer shooters.

Another example of age helping the DOD:S experience is how “old school” it feels. Despite the WW2 setting, DOD:S plays more like an arena shooter from the 1990s than today’s super serious military shooters. Forget aiming down iron sights. Secondary fire for most weapons throws solid punch instead. Expect to spend a lot of time zipping about, shooting dudes with crosshairs, punching them for good measure, and laughing at the exaggerated ragdoll physics.

Day of Defeat: Source is not a masterpiece but it’s worth a look if you have a hankering for a shooter that isn’t too serious.

One word: Underrated.


Wish Valve would promote this game more or update it

Day of Defeat Source is one of the better WWII titles on the market. It is aging now, being from the HL2 era, but with a small market for WWII games there aren’t a lot of options. The multiplayer format is good, using a capture point system. The weaponry and combat is excellent, and holds up well.

• Good authentic weapons

• Good multiplayer format
  
• For an older game, the graphics aren’t awful

• As with other old multiplayer games the player base is very experienced and will pwn you.
  
• You may be forced to play a class you don’t enjoy.
